You'd like to think he'd stay, but if he did go then you'd hope he considered seriously where he was goin. If you wanna leave to win stuff, thats easy, sign for Celtic or (my preference) Rangers. That way you're guaranteed medals and trophies!! You wanna leave for the challenge, go abroad to Italy or Spain. You want money, Barcelona/Madrid/Chelski. But stay in this country and, deserved or not, you're gonna get alot of unwanted attention from dissatisfied fans, you aint gonna be welcome within miles of your home town ground and you aint gonna be appreciated when you return. Probably. Liverpool fans are recognized as being the most knowledgable fans in the country, and they tend to appreciate players that come back more than most teams fans.....but I get the impression that a couple of players wouldn't be too welcome should the second one move and both come back to play against us. I believe if Owen did return with Madrid he'd get his name chanted before the game, but wouldnt appreciate the crowd durin it, specially if he scored. And to be honest, he'd have no hidin place as he sat warmin the bench for the first 60 minutes!! Be horrible to see Gerrard get that too, as jus like Owen, he was/is a hero to so many ordinary people that pay so much money year in year out to watch them play.
But.............. You got a job. You took the apprenticeship, got paid whilst learnin your trade, and maybe had time off to go to college and study.... Then you're taken on, learn the secrets of your employer, maybe help them become challengers within their field.... and you get head-hunted. What would you do? Boils down to the same thing really, jus a lot more passion involved than industrial stuff ever has.
Players move on, fans get over it, and sometimes that same player regrets what he's done.... if you consider yourself a fan you have no choice but to thank him for his outstandin service and wish him well, tho not at our cost. Owen played us for a monkey too long, cost us dear financially. 8M was a steal compared to what we paid for some of the dross we have on our books. If Gerrard goes, then his legacy will be a good one hopefully, and maybe that way both parties do well out of the deal.
For what its worth, I want him to stay. If he looks ahead to next season with a fit Alonso, hopefully a fit Cisse and whatever signins Rafa's allowed to make this summer he'll see he can get the best of both worlds, jus may take a little time. End of the day, "Good things come to those who wait..." as the Guinness adverts used to say.
Stu Averill, a wannabe Scouse/Scot. I remember the good times & have faith in them comin back
Beside the Hillsborough Flame, I heard a Koppite mournin, "Why so many taken on that day?" Justice has never been done. But their memory we'll carry on. There'll be Glory Round The Fields Of Anfield Road
