Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

When our players shine other clubs are interestered therefore the rumours grow. If Xabi wanted to play for Real or Barca he would had signed for them in the summer, he turned Madrid down to play for us and Rafa. He is going to have a lot to prove after comming from an injury from his point of view and I don't see him leaving.

If they want to replace Keane, Alonso is not the player to do it, so I wouldn't worry about this round of rumours. Real Madrid is an entirely different thing, as they buy players on a whim and not necessarily based on their needs - look at Woodgate and Owen.

Being Spanish himself and if the biggest Spanish club comes a calling, this would be more worrying.

Remember Xabi isn't really Spanish, he's Basque and they dislike the Spanish Royal family as much as the Catalans. Xabi isn't going anywhere in the summer and never mind increasing the £10mil we paid for him. HE is just not gointo go anywhere

Marca, AS and Spanish radio va -  - 9 Mar 2005 17:06
Are reporting that Xabi Alonso’s agent (Daniel Saez) has said both Real Madrid and Man united have renewed their interest in his client and indicated. Daniel Saez indicated that Alonso is happy at Liverpool and would only speak to other clubs with permission of Liverpool.
If Liverpool fails to make the champions league next season both clubs believe they can capture his signing after being turned down last summer. Real Madrid only see Graverson as a short time fix and believe Xabi would now be interested. This summer Real’s president has said no one galactico will be signed but the club plans to invest in young Spanish stars. Alonso would fit perfectly, other targets include Jose Antonio Reyes and Joaquin.

Manchester United are looking to replace Roy Keane and with no chance of landing Gerrard have turned to his team mate. Spanish sport journal AS reports that both clubs would be willing to increase the £10 million transfer fee Liverpool paid last year.

I would say that this was disturbing news if the source was at least 5 % reliable. There are plenty of great Spanish footballers and at least one brilliant coach, but there are also plenty crappy journalists. Marca is full of pure fiction, and I would count my fingers after shaking hands with one of their journalists
