The spine - Who is in it

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Whilst afa has said the right things about the squad and how hard they are working etc, who do you think makes up his spine of the ideal team and who would he not neccessarily replace but get another player in to strengthen the squad

Any new plyers must be fairly realistic

My spine would be

GK Undecided due to fitness issues

Jami Carragher, although I admit I thought he would be replaced at the start of the season he is now almost irreplaceable

Gerrard - just check out the 100 so threads

Alonso - A player who I think will become as important as Gerrard and these two could be the foundation for the EPL's best midfield next season

Morientes - Although new I think he will become pivotal and the remaining strikers will be crying out to play alongside him

Im not saying the other players arent up for it although we all have our opinions there I just think that with limitless money Benitez woulld pick players to blend in with the four above.

I can see either durinh Jan or in the summer careful selection of a new central defender, a midfield playmaker and a striker on par with Alonso SG and Morientes if possible

At a guess Aimar for example

if we're talking of quality right through the middle then i reckon you're about right with your list, taff. in the vacant keeper spot i'd have to put niemi - i think he's the only keeper of quality we'd have a sniff at.

and its weird how morientes feels indispensible already.

Carra
Riise
Sami - altho his best days are behind him
Stevie
Xabi
Milan
Morientes

we laso have very decent players in Finnan, Kewell (whwn he is on form!), Hamann (age perhaps a problem) and Luis Garcia is potentially a very good player if he can work on some areas of his game and his consistency.

Alos young lads coming through like Otsemobor, Welshy and of course Sinama Pongolle thw sqaud isn't as bad as some would make out, probably need 3 or 4 top quality players to be challenging for the title IMO.

i think everyone would agree with the spine. Id like to see cudicini in goal personally but alonso and gerrard should be the best central meidfielders seen in the premiership since viera and petite in their prime.
not sure about the strikers but two of morientez, cisse and baros. carragher is the defensive spine but we do need anew defender as hypia is coming to the end and whitbread is not there yet

thats spot on that

the squad we have is just a bit thin we injuries but i think there is a good group of lads there

a couple more established signings and we can mount a challenge

has their been any recent news on possible signings lately, i think the summer could be pivitol for next season. Rafa will no doubt put in double effort on and off the pitch. Cisse will return hopefully, and with three strikers of the same caliber, we should be looking good for next season. The squad of the new era is taking shape for the future.

That would be one hell of a good first team!

In my opinion our spine consists of;

1/ Carragher
2/ Gerrard
3/ Alonso
4/ Morientes

1/ Jamie Carragher has been sensational this season. One of a league's best central defenders. Should be vice captain.

2/ Steven Gerrard - Our Captain, Englands best midfielder

3/ Superb passer and excellent reading of game as well as calm head. This season has been impressive but next he will be fully adjusted and even better.

4/ If he can show the quality we know he can he will be a very important player. I doubt he'll be top scorer but he will add so much more than just goals.

A special mention must go to Sami Hyypia who is getting on a bit but is still a massive defensive rock for us.

Our inability to keep clean sheets this season does not really point to these 2 players playing as well as a lot of Reds fans would have us believe.

Well our goalkeepers are part to blame for the low amount of clean sheets. Most goals that we've let in have been laughable. Thank god we've signed Carson.

The spine:
-Alonso
-Baros
-Carragher
-Gerrard
-Hamann[on his good days]

We are terribly missing Finnan right now.

I have been looking at the back four closely lately and i have to say that they are too slow, and easy to get behind.
Carra is a rock, Sami also - but rocks dont move that fast, i dont think that Carra for instance is a top class full back as in the modern game you have to get up and down - when he had a spell at LB he got a nosebleed if he crossed the halfway line!
As a centre back he looks more comfortable as he is a brilliant marker and tackler but his lack of mobility with Hyypia is costing us.

I used to think get somebody experienced for Carragher to learn off, but this season he has become the old head and I await the slating but get Danny Gabiddon, laid back and fast and needs to learn off the likes of JC and Benitez.

There have been an awful lack of clean sheet so far this season but its not defenders sole jobs to keep goals out, its about the rest of the team keeping the ball and not letting the opposition get at the back four as easily as they have been. In my opinion Gerrard is gone, so plan without him. if he's still here its a bonus. What we need before we can even think about having a first team capable of challenging is a centre back, a central midfielder, maybe another full back and two wingers. I'm talking about next season when (hopefully) we'll have Cissé back aling with Nandoa and Milan. That is only a 1st team, we still need to flesh out the squad as well
