Alonso is from the Basque region where "X" is pronounced as "ch" so old Tosh is spot on :cool:

I'm firmly of the opinion that this falling over ourselves to pronounce things properly is part of the rush to be PC. In years gone by, the best Nunez could have hoped for was noon-ez. On a bad day he might even have been noonzzzz. But all this Nyoonieth? Load of old b0ll0cks if you ask me.
We didn't bother in my youth that 'Crife' should be pronounced Croyff, or that Villa (the bloke who scored after that mazy dribble in the cup final, not the clsaret and blue underachievers) should be pronounced Viya
or that Glen Hyson should be pronounced Heeson (although in the case of the last one we didn't overly care to be frank), jeez when I was a lad if you called Pele anything other than Pelly you were getting above your station. The only cure for which? a group kicking round the back of the sports hall. Am I any the worse off for it? I'll let you be the judge. Did I ever tell you how we used to have a night out for a fiver? well.............................................(Micky gets dragged off, like as not for a good kicking behind the Sports Hall).

I don't know anyone who actually uses the correct pronunciations apart from a few TV commentators. Each to his own I suppose - I call him Noonez but if the next man wants to be all European and call him Nooni-eth then that's fine by me. Just heaven help him if he tries to pronounce it properly and gets it wrong

i remember in the mid nineties when there was a spell when commentators were instructed to pronounce peter ndlovu's name "peter ndluuurrrrvvvvvvv"

c'mon, its not THAT difficult and definately not pompous to try and pronounce someone's name properly. personally i'm happy to hear commentators trying.

My favourite mispronunciation was for Youri Djorkaeff, think it was Barry Davies who called him Youri Jerk-off :laugh:

Was actually the other night against Watford that commentator ( dont know his name, but he sounded like that commentator better associated with boxing ) was calling Pongolle "Sineema Pyongolla"! Thought that one was quite funny
