4th the new first?

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

The coca-cola cup and Fa cup are mickey mouse trophies. The league and CL are all that count.

I got slated a while back for saying I don't think we'll win the league in the next 5 years (although nobody said they thought we would).

But if we are to have any chance of being number 1 in the future we MUST be in the CL EVERY year. I think the first 3 are a given for the next few years unless Manu continue to slide.

Therefore it feels like the season boils down to getting 4th, narrowing the gap on first, and getting into the knockouts of the CL.

I know its not the dream to come 4th but I'd settle for that every year for the next 3 years, get funds, buy good players and narrow the gap. I'd sacrifice all ****** domestic cups for that.

Sensible idea but put like a none passionate pr!<k.

To say the other cups are meaningless isn't a football fans attitude. Its a glory hunters attitude. Some might argue its the other way round, well to see my team win ANY match, weather its a friendly or not makes me proud. I hate to see my team lose unlike some people on here.

I can understand what you are saying about Finances though. I believe LFC will win the league in the next 3-4 years and i believe you are very wrong to say they won't. We have a core now of  4 Excellent young players who will provide a future back bone for the side. Two of which are local lads.

Steven Gerrard
Xabi Alonso
Jamie Carragher
John Arne Riise

Harry Kewell could push himself into that if he regains form but thats a big if. We have other good squad players.

Cisse, Baros, Finnan, Hyypia, Kewell, Warnock, Luis Garcia, Nunez, Dudek

We need in my opinion, a striker WITH THE QUALITY of Anelka at least and a new centre half who is what Hyypia was a few seasons ago and possibly a new top class keeper. With that then we'd have a squad capable of being the best. It would just be a case of picking the right squad players for the right games.

I think it could be done with spending £20million on three players. They do however all have to be quality and play in the positions i stated.

i would disagree with you that the fa cup is a mickey mouse cup, the league cup is though, ok at the end of the day its nice to win any trophy, but i think the aim is closing the gap in the league and try and do our best in the champions league, tahts the no 1 priority, but winning any trophy no matter who u support is still enjoyable but as i say league and cl are the ones that really matter

If we get to the final of the carling or fA cups you only have to see the size of the crowd to see what winning a tophy means to some people.

You should not rubbish these competitions particularly the FA cup. It is most players dream to walk out at Wembley or Cardiff and win the FA cup. It was only those ba5tard manc scum that tried to devalue it because they thought they were too big for a domestic trophy now look at them fighting for third.

And we will win the PL within the next 3 to 4 years   :p

Well said Rock, more respect due!

I bet Shanks, Paisley, Dalglish & Rafa would never call it a mickey mouse cup. They had/have pride in our domestic competitions.

Big Niall I accept your arguments but I disagree slightly. Given the choice of 1) Winning the FA cup+ Coco cola cup+ 5th in the league (UEFA cup) and 2) Third round elimination in FA cup+ third round elimination Coca Cola cup+ 4th in the league (CL football) I'd take number 2 any day. Without CL football we are nothing.

But I think you are mistaken when you don't think we can win the league next 5 years. By looking at the progress Benitez has made over the last 6 months I think we can challenge for major honours pretty soon. We have some really good players. Gerrard, Baros and Alonso would stand out in any team. What we have been missing is a formation and strategy that works. We have not been playing as a team. Benitez is addressing this and I must say the difference between Houllier's team and Benitez babes is astonishing. I can only see us getting better and better over the next months. We have been unlucky this year. Injuries and key decisions by referees have hit us bad. Next year this team will be extremely hard to break down. Just look at our midfield! It will be the best hardest working midfield Liverpool have seen in 20 years. Riise, Alonso, Gerrard, Hamann etc are extremely hard working and very fit. They will not give you half a yard space or a split second to control the ball. And with team players like Garcia and Baros chasing the ball like crazy up front we can tear down any team.
If football is banned in heaven. I'd rather go to hell.

from the transformation rafa is putting together, dont you think that a bit of silverware shows the an acomplishment of what he has done for the squad. Winning the Carling cup is a direction of where we are going towards what all counts for you.

Silverware does not equal success, important silverware equals success. Clubs like Leicester and Middlesborough enjoy the coca cola cup.

Don't get me wrong, if its on offer lets take it but its not exactly something you start the season going for. The FA cup is really a day out and nothing more.

I do feel good about Benitez though, the team is definately improving and when we do win the league it will feel much better than 1990 when, lets be honest, we expected to win "another" league.

some interesting comments but do we always have to have such idiots on this forum, I mean if you think somebody's opinion is rubbish then fair enough, but name calling like "dumbo" is something I'd expect from a four year old. "takes on to know one , etc, yawn!"

This is a ****** unbelievable thread ever I've read in this forum!!

What is the ****** matter with you that you think FA Cup or Carling Cup are Mickey Mouse? I can't believe it!!

There is NOTHING with wrong those cup, you ****** gloryhunters!! I am ****** sick of it and all you want is Liverpool to win the league and European Champions League, yes of course we do. Most of Scousers are very patient and they know they will win the league in perhap 3 or 4 years.

I am ****** sick and tired of those gloryhunters are always impatient about Liverpool. If you don't like it and then p1ss off and support ****** scum b@stards Chelsea!!!

Gloryhunters fans MUST patient about Liverpool and should have their faith in Rafa and his players, all you do is MOAN MOAN MOAN MOAN MOAN MOAN MOAN about their players, get a ****** grip, ffs!!! Cos you gloryhunters DON'T really understand about football things and go to the library and learn more about football things!!

FA Cup is a beautiful knockout cup and it is very exciting and one of most FAMOUS trophy in the world, i did dream when I was little boy to see Liverpool to win the FA Cup and the dream came true because I was so happy when I visited to Wembley to see Liverpool v Everton in 1986 and I was only 9 year also I tell you something on that special day, I cried when Gary Lineker scored for Everton in the first half and I was so happy after Ian Rush scored 2 goals and Craig Johnston scored onee. It was a beautiful day for us and never forget that day in my life.

YOu should be proud of Liverpool to win any trophies, if you are not proud of it then you ARE not REAL Liverpool supporter!!
