Yet another obsticle

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Postby A.B. » Thu Nov 18, 2004 1:03 am

Just three weeks ago Djibril Cisse broke his foot on the same ground Jamie Carragher and Milan Baros picked their long term injuries last year. Cisse not being able to play for the rest of the season left Liverpool without a key player up front.

But even so there was still optimism as we still have Baros,Pongolle,Mellor along with Kewell and Garcia who can play up front. Baros picked up a small hamstring injury and was unable to play against Birmingham which costed us the points.

Baros returned with a flying start as he scored his first hat-trick against Crystal Palace. Things started to look good for us and the Czech international but unforunately today Baros picked up yet another injury. It has not been said how long he will be on the side lines but yet another obsticle has been thrown our way.

Pongolle and Mellor are not nearly experienced to make the same impact as Baros would so what does that leave us with?

Still it is not all doom and gloom. Steven Gerrard, one of the best midfielders in the world is expected to return against Middlesbrough and if anybody can create a spark it has to be Gerrard. Not only will he create chances for his fellow team-mates to score upfront or from midfield he will score as well.

Gerrard's return will boost the strength of not only our midfield but the whole squad. Antonio Nunez was unable to play in the reserves match yesterday as it was too early for him but he will be in action on November,25th.

So it may seem that we have no bloody luck at all but even so we have to walk on with our heads held high once again.

Our fixtures can't possibly get any more difficult as we face Boro,Monaco and Arsenal next. However impossible is nothing. We have good enough of players and a manager to ge the results we need.

Its always the way that when you are down you get the hardest kicks, and its bloody typical of our luck to suffer yet another injury.

The way I see it is that Pongolle needs to start delivering. He had one of the finest reputations in the world at underage level but he must surely see a chance for himself now and he has got to take that chance.

Luis Garcia hasn't played all that great lately so I hope that he will find himself soon along with Kewell.

It's going to be one bloody long season.

I agree man -impossible is nothing. :) It all comes down to our faith in our great manager and i believe we all have it.

I think AB we are beginning to see the likes of Josemi and Garcia coming back down to earth after a great start in England. That often happens players (Mutu last year) as they seem to be extremely keen to impress and a lot of things initially go right for them.

After the highs these two guys are experiencing some lows: Garcia in particular barely got a touch in the Depo away game and wasted a great chance when he was 1 on 1 with Molina.

Garcia needs an away goal soon to settle him down, but he's the kind of player Liverpool need to progress.

I'd go with...

Code: Select all
                     Mellor
Kewell          Luis Garcia           Nunez
           Gerrard         Alonso
Riise      Hyypia       Carragher   Finnan
                    Kirkland

I think Mellor can do enough to help get the ball wide and cause problems in the box with crosses etc. We need to play as much possession football as possible now and i think we have the players to do it.... of course i'm assuming Nunez is decent, if not then Finnan right side and Josemi right back.

Mellor is the sort of player who'd score goals from crosses and i think we have the right players to give him good service.

I think if we try to play through the middle with Mellor upfront, we'll get stopped quite easily, also the return of Gerrard will be a massive boost. :)

I'm interested to what formation Rafa will use come this Saturday. Nunez will be fit by the time we play Arsenal, he will play a reserve match next week.

With Baros injured it will propably be Kewell and Garcia up front. Let's see what happens, maybe the injury Baros picked up isn't as it bad as it seems. [I encourage you all to pray that it isn't]

very attack minded line-up. the midfield will support and compensate for the lost of Baros. gerrerd coming back might also give us the push and we will have to give mellor more matches to show what he can do with good players around him.

i'll go with the same line-up...

Great formation with the least we have got. But in this formation, Mellor really gotta hold the ball up very well (ala Shearer) and also draw as much of the defence away so our forwards can cut in. With this, Gerrard and Xabi has more options in playing a ball in front of them.

Nonetheless I will stick to this formation too. back up for more steel in the midfield will be having risse over kewell, and traore in LB. Or Finnan over Nunez, Josemi at RB.

I'd rather see Riise on the bench. Traore is a better defender.

I only seen a bit of the reserve game but Gerrards link up play with Mellor was perfect found him everytime. We would have to play Mellor up front I dont rate Pongolle he gives the ball away to much needs games under his belt but we arnt in a possition, to be experimenting we need goals, Mellor on from the start.
Lets see if this kid can finally make the first team.

No he wont your right but he did look abit lost on saturday with not being used to playing with the first team, bit shy and nervous in front of the adoring anfield crowd.
He could easily bag at least 15-20 goals this season once he gets a goal it should settle him and he would be on a roll.
The other night he had about 15 shots on goal, the goalie for wolves had a terrific game I know its only the reserves like, but Mellor was well on target, Ive always been a big fan of his.
And im glad hes back with us.

Well he'll get the run and his confidence will improve. He might be the silver lining. Let's hope.
