Centre backs - Who?

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Postby Pig Catcher » Fri Nov 12, 2004 9:26 pm

O.K, it's no secret that we need a new centre back, its been a problem area for over 18 months now and we still haven't been close to a solution.

The new centre back must have pace, that is an absolute neccesity, strength is very important for all centre backs, and when I say strength I mean body strength, playing ability is a bonus and should not be in the minimum criteria but is desirable.

My candiates are:

Joseph Yobo - I have always been impressed with him since the 2004 world cup. Has shown that he can hack it in the Premiership and always does a great job on Henry, is really quick and strong, though not much ball ability. I think we could unsettle him and get him for about 7.5 MIL.

Ledley King - Probarly an unrealistic target but he is quick, strong, has ball playing ability and is English. But he is unlikely to leave, and a bid in excess of 15MIL would be required.

Boumsong - Though he rejected us before, that was due to a clash with Houllier, he stated that clearly and called Liverpool a great club. He is quick and strong, he is extremely competent and destined to be a regular for France. Rangers are in finacial disaray and I'm sure if we put a big enough bid in they couldn't refuse.

Tomas Ujfalusi of Hamburger SV - Was very impressed with him in Euro2004, he is strong and quick, he would be a more risky signing as he is untested in the Premiership, not sure about the fee.

I would be very interested to here your suggestions.

i wouldnt want ledley, not for anywhere near 15 mill anyways, bu i think u left out two bankers...

william gallas and mr dawson
Gallas is subject to requirements at chelsea and could do a job for any premiership club, and dawson is unsettled at a poor nott forest and wants prem football.
we need someone as cover but im a little happier with the situaion after seeing whitbread play well for us in teh carling cup

Tomas Ujfalusi is good on the ball but I'm not convinced about him defensively.

King is a funny one PC. I really rate him and posted as much a couple of weeks back. I said then that he would cost 10 million minimun and got absolutely laughed off. I don't know what planet some people live on sometimes as far as the fee is concerned but I think he is absolutely top, top quality. he's everything that we need and i figure would probably add 6 or 7 points a season to our Premiership total. Price? you're probably right IMHO, between 12 and 15 million but get ready for the flak, unless they've changed their minds he's worth about 2 mill apparantly.

I really rate this guy highly unfortunately Fiorentina signed him in the summer for a steal at 5m. :(

Gallas would be a great signing but even if he was surplus Mourinho would never sell to us.

Spurs claimed they turned down a 20m pound bid from Chelsea in the summer for Ledley King, a bid later confirmed by Jose Mourinho.

Jeez, Mourinho's an idiot too! I remember when I was fending attackers off from all directions last time I had to mention that Wenger was interested just to get me some breathing space. My crime? I dared to suggest that King would cost more than Gallas. Silly me.

If that is true they were mad to turn it down as IMO King is vastly over rated.

His positional sense and decision making leave alot to be desired.

I think King is a decent player but 20m for him is obscene, especially seeing that Carvahello, THE best defender in the world last season, cost 100g less.

Gallas is the perfect answer. He is lightning quick, is very strong, a very competent defender, and is already adjusted and proven in the Premiership.

But I don't think he will be leaving Chelsea, Mourinho will know his value to his squad and will not let him go. Also if he were to go there would be host of top clubs in for him, Arsenal and Barcelona are just two clubs who are known to admire him.

What about Sol Campbel. I heard rumours that his contract at Highbury is comming to an end, and he might be interested in a move to Anfield. Image

There aren't too many options that we can afford, really. Best bet when you're talking about balancing quality with affordability would be Dawson, although I think Upson - even though his form isn't great at the moment - would get you a classy player for no more than a couple of mill.

the only players i can think of to buy are gallas & king (proven premiership players). Both, unfortunately both will cost a lot of money.

My guess is rafa will probabily buy someone we have never really heard of, and he will turn up to be very good  :D.

But if spurs get relegated, we should buy king. He is the exact replica of sol campbell. Look at how arsenal has done when he went there.
