Livorno's Morosini dies after collapsing in Serie B match

The 25-year-old former Italy Under-21 defender suffered a cardiac arrest during a game in Italy's second tier and has now been pronounced dead after falling into a coma
Livorno midfielder Piermario Morosini collapsed and died during his side's Serie B meeting with Pescara at the Stadio Adriatico on Saturday.

The 25-year-old fell to the ground in the 33rd minute with medical staff immediately running onto the pitch to perform cardiac massage on the player.

The game was abandoned and Morosini left the stadium in an ambulance, slipping into a pharmacological coma before passing away.

Confirming Morosini's death Dr. De Blasi stated: "It was a cardiac arrest. He arrived dead at the hospital, he never recovered."

Adding to the doctor's words, Pescara president Daniele Sebastiani told Tuttomercatoweb: "Unfortunately, they tell me now that the boy has died. He had three cardiac arrests, one after the other. I have no words, really..."

The incident comes only a month after Bolton's Fabrice Muamba collapsed during an FA Cup game against Tottenham at White Hart Lane, with the midfielder now recovering after having to fight for his life.

Puerta Bonita defender Sergio Granero survived a heart attack the day after the Muamba ordeal during a match in Spain's third division against Pozuela.

Morosini was on loan to the Tuscan outfit from Serie A side Udinese. All games in Italy this weekend have been cancelled in memory of Morosini.

thats terrible, my thoughts go out to the lads family and friends.
maybe these modern footy players are getting pushed too hard, they played more often years ago and the game was more physical but they never covered the distances that these modern players do. these modern players are almost too fit, they are weighed every five minutes, they dont carry any excess weight and between training and playing they expend a lot of energy and thats all off a diet of rabbit food, to me it`s a bit like when you get those olympic long distance runners who pick up mystery viruses easily because their ridiculously hard training regimes affects their immune systems.

Ya I don't know what's going on, but it's horrible to see this happen.  Clearly footballer need to be better examined.  Injuries are one thing, but losing somebody like this is completely different.

I somewhat wonder if, because it's the Serie B, that they didn't have all the best equipment and staff there to help resuscitate him.  If he were in Muamba's position, maybe he would have had a better chance.  Regardless, this is something that the footballing leagues need to get sorted.

i`m no expert on these things mate but it does say in the article that the lad had 3 heart attacks on the pitch one after the other, sounds like there wasnt much they could do for the poor fella. muamba was lucky as well in the sense that the cardiologist or heart expert who fought to save his life on the pitch wasnt part of the medical team he was a spurs fan at the match who recognised immediately what was happening to muamba and ran down and offered his services.

That's a good point.  I saw the picture of the players for the B game and there couldn't have been more then a few hundred there watching, so I guess there was nobody to help out.

Any chance clubs will start hiring a heart specialist after all this is happening?

they might do mate but thankfully these types of things are still relatively rare, when you think of all the countries in the world with professional league`s and when you consider the different divisions in all those countries there must be thousands and thousands of league games played every weekend around the world and usually you get maybe one of these cases every couple of years at most.
i think they`ll probably go down the route of screening players a couple of times a season instead of just giving them a heart scan when they take their medical prior to signing.
