The miners emerge

i've been following the story of the trapped chilean (and one bolivian) miners intently for the last few weeks and now its finally coming to and end. after 10 weeks under ground - imagine what that feels like - these guys are being winched one by one through 700 meters of rock inside a 70cm wide metal sarcophagus on a 15 minute journey to the top.

i've been watching some of the live stream of the event, and what really strikes me is how relaxed everybody is, and how normal the miners look. around the shaft everyone is talking in calm quiet voices and when the miner emerges from the capsule he's greeted as if he'd just nipped out for a couple of days. the miner then gives a faint smile before the much more emotional hugs with family and loved ones.

i know they have been receiving counseling, advice from psychologists and even media training but i still find it amazing. if it was me i reckon i'd look like some half crazed, soot covered cross between grizzly adams and animal from the muppets - all full of beard and spinning eyes.

i'm going to be glued to it all day and hope each and every miner comes out safe and well.

Its been a fantastic human story Andy, I found it somewhat amusing that its been reported that several of miners have had their mistresses as well as they wifes arrive at the site. Which had lead to speculation that some of them might want to stay in the mine  :D

For me the key is regular communication with the exterior and the fact that they had water and food.

Had the communication was more scarce or the food wasn't as available, it should have been different.

Great news anyway. There was even an ex Chilean international player among the miners.

When they're finished can we send Hicks and Gillette down the hole and pour a load of cement down it?

I'd heard the same story as Laza so I expect one of these lads to get a slap instead of a hug when he emerges!   :Oo:

It has been a great story to follow but I somehow can't seem to get that damn.ed Bee Gees song out of my head. :no

There's a great line doing the rounds:

Apparently Roy Hodgson has flown out to Chile and ordered the miners back down the hole, saying that they werent playing deep enough. If they refuse to obey instructions he's threatened to substitute them for Christian Poulsen.

Bill Kenwright has been on the phone to the Chilean miners wondering whether they're interested in a ground share as Everton seek to upgrade from Goodison.
