Us Brit's like to try to occupy the moral High ground on things like this but our record is as bad as anyones. The main defence often useed for German attricities in the Eastern Front was that , the sheer numbers of Gypsies , Slav's and Jews that Germany's Eastern expansion displaced threw their 'plans' into dissorder and chaos.,

The original idea was for them to be 'relocated' to Madagasgar , the Hundred 's of thousands of 'non Aryan' that were to be moved became Millions and the numbers unworkable the 'final solution' was often seen as a desperate attempt to copethat failed, with unimaginably evil consequences. :angry:

Conversely the Vietnamese often left wounded enemy alive as it would place a greater strain on the enemies manpower and resources attending to those wounded .

I think the common thread throughout history is as humans we are a few steps away from being crazy killers.

Its difficulyt to imagine yourself in that situation but from the bits of reading Ive done people who look back see themselves as another person and cant imagine that they would do such things.

Assuming that we are all ordinary people we cannot imagine ourselves in that situation but (bear with me please ) we have a government that has taken us to war but I dont see Blair as evil at all but what if the thing escalated a bit at a time where does that support end. So we find ourselves drafted we dont want to be there but its the law oyur government that did help us make money with house prices etc has now got us in a conflict

So one of our mates gets killed and we end up killing. The thing that fascianates me with Vietnam is it was fought by guys probably similar to the ones I grew up with on housing estates then they find themselves in a jungle. so back to us we under stress start behaving badly and the other side do and it escalates.

My point is that its idiots like us that fight these things and whilst there were barbarians in the German Army and their leadership well no debate there but there were as in all wars the majority just kinda found themselves there and in a horrific situation with no social rules and I do feel sorry for them

I think the main difference between the warring sides in WWII was that on the German side, atrocities against civilians and Communist Party members on the Eastern Front was policy.

The Allies committed numerous attrocities as well, but on a far smaller scale than the Axis, and for the most part, these actions were not policy and were committed by poorly led soldiers.

That said, the systematic destruction of Germany and Japan from the air was official policy, and despite being militarily inadequate, it was continued as an unofficial form of "vengeance".

The bombing of Hamburg in 1943 was an horrific act but the war was still raging, but the firebombing of Dresden in 1945 had no military objective other than to "teach the Jerries a lesson".
