Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

You insist on ignoring the commercial side of LFC and focus on football issues.

Please comment on the commercial sense of sacking Rafa.  Did he or did he not make money for the club, work within a tight budget and maintain the consistency the club needed to win sponserhip deals and expand our brand appeal?

The question of what was behind the sacking necessarily involves asking what best serves the owners' aim of selling the club for the highest possible price in a short timeframe. If the removal of Rafa didn't serve that goal, they wouldn't have sacked him. One suggestion then is that it paves the way for the sale of our most valuable players, but I struggle to see how that would improve the chances of maximising the sale price. Selling Gerrard or Torres - and retaining most or all of the proceeds - even aside from the impact on marketing, would massively undermine our chances of securing a top four spot next season; and the sale of the club is premised on Champions League financials - Broughton himself said this. An LFC with Gerrard and Torres is much more valuable than one without. The second theory is that Rafa was sacked because of the team's performance last term and that a fresh start - the hiring of a new manager - gives the team a better chance of making a top four spot and perhaps even of keeping hold of some of our better players.

Sack Rafa to make a fresh start - all for the sake of 6 months whilst waiting for new owners? Not worth the upheaval, bad publicity and player reaction - and in a world cup year!  Replacement values anyone?

He made a big profit by selling alonso...that helped his favour, by selling one of our best players.

And you can't ignore the football issues, we're a football club!

Anyway, we're not going to agree and that's reflected in the forum. half of the guys here are glad he's gone, the other half wish he was still here.

The sooner we get a new manager the better. Only then will we see what the future holds.

You keep screaming its your opinion, just be honest, say you want to win the league.

Reg, if that's fine for you, then ok.

I wanted and want more and that includes winning the league. Is there a Liverpool fan who doesn't want a league win for Liverpool?

Getting off to a good start and sustaining ourselves in the top four would improve the chances of a sale. If we continue in anything like the same vein as last season - and the owners might have considered that a serious possibility with Rafa at the helm - then we will be seen as a club in major decline which would make us a less attractive proposition for buyers. So, if Hicks and Gillet want their £600m then last season has to be shown to be just a blip as the club's potential cannot be maximised if we are not the Champions league.

The other explanation is that the owners saw Rafa as an obstacle to the planned sale of our best players, but as I said, I don't see how selling our best players makes the club a more attractive proposition.

We got closer than we had done in nearly twenty years and we won't get that close for a long time now , you want a title winning manager and club - well now that Rafa has gone and we have our current owners it won't be a title winning club or even a cup winning club for a while now .

question - which top player has been sold since we rightly got rid of the manager.
Question - how is the manager meant to have an actual say in who stays and goes ?

Proper doin my head in all this rubbish.

IF THEY WANTED TO SELL PLAYERS THEY WOULD HAVE DONE THAT AND NOT BEEN ERSED ABOUT THE FAILING MANAGERS OPINION.
