Rafa's 'small team' remark - Good article on teamtalk

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

When the bitters came 4th in the league and qualified for the champions league Gollum was boasting that they were the top team on mersyside, they then went on and failed on the big stage, because they were just a small team who had a good season, the next season they went back to being a middle of the table team, big teams have ambition and thrive in the big stage. toffees just get stuck.

Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez has defended the remarks he made about Everton being a 'small club' following the Merseyside derby on Saturday.

Benitez's comments caused outrage on Merseyside following the goalless draw at Anfield.

Everton boss David Moyes revealed his disappointment at Benitez's comments and the club issued a statement slamming the Spaniard's reaction.

However, Benitez insists the comments were not meant to upset Everton, but were made rather in defence of his own side.

"It's easy for me to explain what I've said," Benitez told the Liverpool Echo.

"I've read lots of comments from Bill Shankly over the years where he's made comments which compared Liverpool as a club to other teams. I've done it on this occasion.

"I'm the manager of Liverpool and I was simply comparing our club to most other clubs who come to Anfield.

"We are in a position where we are trying to compete with Manchester United, Chelsea and Arsenal, while for other teams and managers that's more difficult.

"The top four are considered the biggest clubs in the Premiership, and even managers from other teams accept it's different for them when they play against the bigger teams. That's what I was saying.

"We have been on a good run and it's always a pity when you don't win at home, particularly against your local rivals."

Recent Everton events to promote turnout for the games:-

Ladies Day for the game against Blackburn,

Half Season Tickets being sold via radio and newspaper, with the clincher being that you would get an away ticket for the derby,

Rocky's turning up,

...and I seem to remember something around Halloween that if you turned up in an outfit, you got in half price?

Fucking big club alright. And seriously, thier fans are all ugly bastards. I've never once seen a handsome Evertonian.

:rasp

1 trophy in the last 20 years, they must be outta their fucking tree if they think they still hold big club status. Anyway, who gives a sh!te? I'm just made up they are biting on it, to$$ers. Making themselves look like right wankers.

From BBC news:

Lee Carsley said: "We've beaten them this season so if we're a small club I hope other small clubs beat them.

"We feel insulted by what he said. It's a stupid thing to say."
I can understand him being frustrated afterwards, but anyone who watched the game will know Andy Johnson had the best chance.

"We could quite easily have won 1-0, which we've done to other teams in the past - so he should keep his opinions to himself."

Another bitter :censored: there then!

Well done Rafa, good him I say! Shanks would be proud

Boohoo carsley, you are sooo bitter! the truth does really hurt.

I really dont care if Rafa called them a small team, its his opinion and its freedom of speech, we have been criticized by mourinho alot!!! but the board didnt have a go at him! did they?

I think we all know what Rafa meant, he was just saying that Everton as a team are not as good as us, that’s why they sat back and defended like the other “small” teams that come to Anfield.

Blown way out of proportion, Rafa didn’t mean any disrespect what so ever, it was purely down to the fact that English is not his first language.
