Phil thompson - What do people think?

What do people think of Phil Thompson?

He finished as a player around the time I started following football, but for all intents and purposes he seems to have been a good player and captain.

He was there in the background during the late 1980s, but he got badly treated by Graeme Souness and he left Liverpool under a cloud in 1991, I think.

Obviously he was brought back by Moores as a surprise choice for Gerrard Houllier's assistant, and most Liverpool supporters under the age of 25 will best know him as the foghorn leghorn on the sideline, funnelling his hands together around his mouth so as to make his booming voice travel further!

He must take a lot of the credit for the early success of the Houllier days, and he did an excellent job as caretaker manager.

In the end things got sour as he had a number of fallings out with players such as Robbie Fowler, and he was shown the door with Houllier as Rafa (understandably) wanted to do things his way.

My feeling about Thompson is that, love him or hate him (and you'll be surprised how many fall into the later category) you cannot deny, that first and foremost, he is a red and he cares as much about the club as any fan.

The reason I bring this up was because I was watching footage again of Istanbul. Thommo was commentating for Skysports and they released clips of him going absolutely mental when we stages our comeback and also during the penalties. It was fantastic.....the guy forget he actually had a job to do (i.e. commentate on the match) but instead let his feelings and love for the club completely take control of himself.

Like Roy Evans, I always felt a small bit sorry for Thommo, as he was caught up in the farce of Houllier's last days, but I hope fans will be kind enough to remember the good times as well, and underneath the sometimes gruff exterior, he's just as much a star struck fan as anyone of us.  :)

he was a legendary player, but a lousy assistant manager.

he kept favouring Heskey and Murphy as a coach wich was sooooo bad.

In what sense was he a lousy assistant manager,he was employed to assist the manager, not pick the team.If my memory serves me right, when he did take charge during GHs illness he didnt do a bad job.

I dont know anything about Rafas back room staff, but lets face it we had a terrible league campaign.Surely this doesnt mean Rafas assistants are lousy.

Phil Thompson was a great player for Liverpool and a great captain. He always showed plenty of bottle and never gave up on a lost cause. He was the Carra of his day.

It came as no suprise to see his reactions during the Champions league final as he is a red through and through,he showed this at half time, when Butch Wilkins and Andy Gray said we had no chance.Thommo in true liverpool style refused to accept this We only need a goal and were back in it he said

A great player and a great fan.

Pointless post if you ask me JBG.

The mans a true red, shown it, done it, cheered and you can tell he means it and loves the club all the time he speaks. He's not bitter, he's not twisted, he's a crackin fella who was an excellent assistant coach.

The guy is simply red to the core - Even as a pundit he makes absolutely no attempt to hide it. He could teach Lawrensen a few things about affinity for the club.

What do mean its a pointless post? Its my opinion of Thompson - I like him - and I ask whats other people's opinion on him seeing that not everybody sees on to eye on Thommo.

He has also had up and down times with the club, but that was well before your time.  :veryangry

Thommo - top bloke AND died-in-the-wool Liverpool fan...what more could you ask?

When Houllier was made solo coach, one of the reasons Thommo was made assistant was because our defence was a shambles.  Once Thommo had been there a couple of weeks we, literally, had the best defence in the country.  Hyppia and Henchoz were solid and extremely well organised.  How anyone can say he was a bad assistant is beyond me.

Phil Thompson was a great player, great assistant manager and performed really well in the role of manager when Gerard Houllier was having heart problems.

A true red legend and if you need a comparison, a carra in his day. part of a legendary team. wished we had more players like him.
Bill Shankly after beating Everton in the '71 cup semi : "Sickness would not have kept me away from this one. If I'd been dead, I would have had them bring the casket to the ground, prop it up in the stands and cut a hole in the lid."

Why did you bother your a*s replying if it was a pointless topic knob cheese?

Don't understand people who do that on forum's, they feel the need to give their opinion on topic's they don't like or agree with - don't freakin read or post if you don't like it.

Anyway, Thommo is a great, great person in my eye's, love's Liverpool, what more can you say?
