Bolton manager reveals Owen interest
by Editor :: 2005-04-08, 15:22
Bolton Wanderers manager Sam Allardyce has revealed that he would make a move for England and Real Madrid striker Michael Owen, if he was available.

Allardyce said: "If Michael Owen was available, he would be first on our list.

"You wonder whether he would want to come and play for us and there would be an obvious problem with his wages and transfer fee.

"But Michael Owen is an England international and the best goalscorer we will have for a long time to come. It would be an achievement if were even to consider us.

"We already have two former Real Madrid players here in Fernando Hierro and Ivan Campo, so you could never actually write off the fact we might get a third!

"To have any chance at all, we would have to qualify for Europe. After that, who knows?

"Regular first-team football is important for most players. Money becomes secondary when you are sitting on the bench every week or sat in the stand.

"Michael Owen is a matchwinner. If he is not getting that adrenalin rush often enough, he probably wants it back."

Owen linked
By Mark Heys

Wanderers manager Sam Allardyce is renound for his big name transfer targets, but his latest mission to try and land England striker Michael Owen would shock even the more hardcore of Bolton supporter.

Allardyce is keen on adding the Real Madrid goalgetter to his squad should he be made available, but knows that finance and club status would have a huge bearing on where the ex-Liverpool favourite plays his football in the times ahead.

In the past household names such as Rivaldo, Dennis Bergkamp, Fernando Morientes, Edgar Davids and Bixente Lizarazu have all been of interest to Allardyce but the players have been unwilling to move or their clubs have rejected the enquiry.

When Owen gets older he will join "Footballers Retirement Home F.C." otherwise known as Bolton but until then Big Sam can keep on dreaming.
