Gerrard targets Premiership title,

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard says that he wants to concentrate on winning the Premiership title following the most turbulent week of his life.
The 25-year-old midfielder signed a new deal on Friday after initially saying that he would leave Anfield.

After the 4-3 friendly win over Wrexham he said: "Hopefully I can go on and win that Premiership medal I am craving.

"I am not proud of the week I have been through, it seemed very difficult, very confusing. I want to forget about it."

Gerrard decided on Tuesday to leave the Reds after contract talks with the club broke down - and on the same day Liverpool rejected a £32m bid from Chelsea for his services.

But on Wednesday, chief executive Rick Parry revealed that Gerrard had decided to stay after a dramatic change of heart.

Gerrard, who was applauded at Wrexham by fans, who also chanted his name, added: "I want to make sure I will never be in that situation because it wasn't nice, trust me.

I was worried about the fans' reaction at Wrexham but it was understandable, they were close to losing their best player, I understand people getting frustrated.

"I wouldn't wish being in my shoes on any other person. Now I just want to ensure that we bring good times back to Anfield.

"I know the fans have been through a lot and I'm not proud of it but I want to find my top form and deliver a trophy for them."

I had a mixed reaction to this interview. Some parts were encouraging...

but The statement about him being the best player seems quite arrogent and shows how much he believes his own hype. many may argue he is the best player but i jus dont think a captin should come out and say that sort of thing to the press.

Some may even argue that carrageher is the best player or even xabi is.

Yeah read that me elf, found it shocking that he can openly say hes are best player, he is world class in my opinion but to come out with a statement like that you must have some ego......and when Xabi is 25 he will be the best center mid on the planet.

Understand your point lads but most true champions in any sport have great self belief ,sometimes in converation stuff just slips out . I don't think Gerrard was even aware that it might have sounded arrogant in the way he expressed himself.

Totaly agree if gerrard has said that but maybe its the papers saying that.I cant see stevie saying hes our best player (although he is at the moment)

he shouldnt have said that, especially after he wasnt our best player last season, and i thought he was supposed to be improving his relationship with the other players, saying he is better than all of them (even if he is better than most) wont help

Lads you can't say he isn't our best player,but Carra and Xabi are right up there with him.It is better when  you have self belief you believe in yourself more.So i can't blame him for not saying it.Why is he captain.

I don't have a problem with these sort of comments at all. I think that to be the best you have to believe you're the best and if you look at the comment you'll see that he's saying that we as fans think he's our best player and thought we were gonna lose him.

Are any of you telling me he's not our best player?He might not have been our most comited or our most consistant performer last season but he is still our best player.

The only player who comes close is Xavi and maybe he could become better but he's not at the moment imo.

Yea very arrogant on his part, but as Woof Woof said, all top players/sportmen have an edge about them. They beleive they are the best and beleive in their ability. The opposite to this could be Djimi Traore (who i really like btw), in terms of i dont think he is that confident with his OWN ability when on the ball and this is clear to see.

But for me i was more worried with the part where he said (paraphrasing) 'I was not worried as to the reaction that i would get from the fans'.
For me this kinda further enhances the point we are all talking about, i think he is saying they wont be angry as I am staying and they will be happy because I am the best player. For him to say 'not worried' i dont know, but I just found it a weird statement, he should have been worried in my opinion, for hom to not be, IMO, shows he thinks he can get away with anything....of course i could be wrong, just what i think!

Quite interesting about u hav to believe ur the best to be the best. Jus thought it was a funny time to release a statment like that.

Although i do understand and for example Mohamed Ali would hav it no other way then believing he was the best. And undoubtably was the best. (i realise he was not a footballer!)

Hopefully will prove this statement right by the end of the season and win the World Player of the Year award. And bring back the premership and world cup. His set himself alot of targets to hit this season!    (england winning the world cup with sven in charge aint gonna happen btw). the thought of england winning the world is as bizare as greece winning the euro cup. ( i was going to say us winnin the champs league, but then realise we were favorites along  )
