Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

I know there is probably a thread with some details, but after reading countless threads saying we will get Real Madrid etc, I wanted to clear up the exact situation for the draw this Friday...

With the line up now complete for the UEFA Champions League first knockout round, following the qualification on matchday six of AS Monaco FC, Bayer 04 Leverkusen, Liverpool FC and Real Madrid CF.

These four clubs will join the 12 sides who had already qualified in the draw that will take place this Friday, (17 December) at UEFA's headquarters in Nyon, Switzerland, starting at 12.00CET. (that is 11am Greenwich meantime) This total of 16 teams comprises the eight section winners and eight runners-up, among whose number are holders FC Porto.

Draw regulations

The draw respects the following principles:

* Clubs from the same association must not be drawn against each other.
* The winners and runners-up of the same group must not be drawn against each other.
* The group winners must not be drawn against each other.
* The runners-up must not be drawn against each other.
* The group runners-up will play the first-leg match at home.

(A decision on whether both Milan clubs will play their second-leg games at home in the same week will be taken by UEFA's Club Competitions Committee.)

The first legs will be played on 22/23 February with the return legs on 8/9 March. The first knockout round will be followed by the quarter-finals, semi-finals and then the final, which will be played in Istanbul, Turkey on 25 May.

we want to avoid milan and juventus really. inter are dangerous but are having a poor season. leverkeusen or lyon would be the most favourable draw i think.

Why does everyone think that Lyon are weak?

They were excellent last year and objectively, they are better than us, Monaco, Leverskusen and Werder Bremen.

Ok, they put in a poor show at Old Trafford but even in that game they gave Man U some problems.

Leverskusen are a dangerous team in Germany, no doubt about that.

As Alex Ferguson said, there's no point at this stage hoping to get X team in the draw, as all teams are very close to each other in knock out matches, as Porto and Monaco showed last year.

Obviously we want to avoid Barcelona and AC Milan, but Werder Bremen could upset us in the same way as we could upset Juventus.

At this stage its swings and roundabouts.

no doubt there are no easy games at this stage but you must prefer to play lyon than juve or milan jbg?

lyon have some great players. junihno in midfield is their star man. they also have elber upfront who is a threat. they are very strong at home and should have battered manure earlier this season.

they are definitely not weak by any means.

Lyon are France's best side for a mile.

There are no "easy" draws, although obviously I'd prefer Lyon to Milan.

One of the top teams will implode (Arsenal?) in the next round, while one of the "also rans" will beat a more fancied side. Thats the nature of cup football.
