Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Postby A.B. » Sat Oct 16, 2004 11:38 pm

First what a great game by the Reds. One of best games in a long time, 2-0 down in the first-half and then the lads come back to win it 4-2. I can't remember the last time we've made a comeback such as this one today. (We were down 1-0 at Anfield against City and came back to win it however this comeback is far greater).

Today's win will definetely boost the team's confidence and determination on the road. I have stated before that on the road we lacked the confidence that we have at Anfield, but today with hard work, confidence and the determination to win, we collected our first three points on the road. This is what we needed to get our heads out of the gutter.

However it is very annoying that some are saying that we were lucky today. I do not think it's luck to score 4 goals and even if it is, on paper it will not say that Liverpool Football Club beat Fulham 4-2 due to luck, all that matters is that we got the points we needed.

Very good performance by most of our players.

Now I do not like critisizing players but theres a few things that need to be said.

First and foremost Diao shouldn't had started in this game. What Rafael Benitez sees in Diao I do not know but in my opinion he will only get worse and worse before he gets any better. Playing Diao with Hamman wasn't the brightest idea but afterall Benitez did say that every player will get equal amount of chances to start.

Three weeks ago Dudek was the most critisized player and he was replaced by Kirkland but then we are starting to critisize a goalkeeper that has been out of action for a very very long time. Kirkland will need just a bit more time before he gets the hang of things.

It's a shame to see Luis Garcia plays poorly on the road. I think he's a briliant player and I really hope that he is able to balance out his performance at Anfield and on the road. At Anfield he is a good player but on the road he struggles. It seems that it will take Luis a bit more time to settle in than Xabier Alonso.

On to Sami Hyypia. I was quite disapointed by Sami. Before this game I and many others said that Sami should not be a captain and after this game it shows that he is not a leader. When Steven Gerrard isn't present then Carragher deserves to be captain. Carra shows characteristics of a leader and I personaly believe he deserves to be the captain. He may not be the best defender in the Premiership but he plays with his heart and works his a$$ off to prove himself.

But other than that I think the lads did a great job. Xabier Alonso was astounding. Whoever said that Milan Baros will not get any better is wrong imo. I think Baros WILL get better as he plays more and more games.

Igor Biscan scoring made me proud, he showed that he is not totaly garbage. We all know how clumsy he was under Houllier but even so he did not play in his natural position and if shows what he showed today and in pre-season he actually might be worth the money we payed for him.

At this point of time I rather have Biscan than Diao in the midfield until the transfer market opens in January. I can not wait until Steven Gerrard and Antonio Nunez return. I am very eager to see how Nunez performs. He has been critisized for not starting at Real Madrid but how can he start in every game with the likes of Roberto Carlos and others? Even Michael Owen can not get a full start.

EDIT]-The next four games we play we must win [v. Charlton, v. Blackburn, v. Birmingham, v. Crystal Palace].

I expect that we collect at least 10 points from those games.

agree, we SHOULD beat Charlton, Palace and Blackburn but Brum will be a tough match, 10 points would be a good result from those 4 games, but we can win all 4 of them.

Yes Birmingham will be tough indeed, they played very aggressively against the Mancs. We will have to keep an eye on Savage, he's the player that could get one of our players injured. He almost did it to Rooney today.

But the advantage going into that game is todays game and the fact that we will play them at Anfield I believe.

You obviously missed all the time Baros was pushed off the ball then? He needs to toughen up and the same for Cisse, one sneeze and they go down, something that is not lost on the refs and when something does happen the ref sees it as diving.

Baros needs to concentrate on his skills and a little heads up now and again when he sets off on one of his runs would help!

Diao may be a waste of space but simple fact of matter is while Stevie G is injured and we have heavy CL/EPL fixture list, Diao will  be given opportunity. Rafa cant afford to burn out Alonso and Hamann.

in the paper today Benitez said he was resting Alonso as he played in the internationals this week and only trained once.  I guess he thought he didn't need to play him against a team as bad as Fulham, but he made the required decision and we won...  Good management!!!
Our job is simple, to support the club, not just parts of the club that are easy to support, but every one who plays a part, that includes ALL players.  We are stronger when we are all walking in the same direction. Walk On

I admit that I am not big fan of Igor, I am giving him a chance and would like to see him more than Diao, he got the blamed for the first goal against Fulham. Diao is not good enough for us and made too many mistakes, hopefully he will leave in January, I don't care how much for him. All I want is Diao out for good.

I think that Hamman, Alonso and Biscan should be the three players that are played when Gerrard comes back from his op cos Diao simply wasn't good enough yesterday, I've always said give Diao a chance as he gives 100% but yesterday he looked half heart and gave sloppy passes away

lets face it, nobody in the right mind will pay money for diao after against fulham. We should keep him until Rafa sorts out the team. I can't imagine what will happen if carra gets injured now. But if it happens, diao can be sort of a stop-gap replacement.... I don't like it, but this is what happens when you spend 10 million for diouf, 11 million for heskey, 5 million for diao.. (you get the message rite  :D ), ie.... we are short of cash....

i seem to remember that the last time we came from two goals down to win a game was at home to newcastle in 1998. we eventually won 4-2 with owen and karl heinz riedle getting a brace.
