Bloody hell - Steve mcmahon and his big mouth

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Postby ConnO'var » Wed Oct 25, 2006 4:49 pm

Out here we don't get much media coverage and analysis from our ex-players coz we only get the Star Sports programs out of Asia....

Have we been seeing our ex-players totally slagging us off back home too?

Case in point in my case is Steve McMahon who's actually doing pundit work for Star Sports....

He's been ripping into us this season something awful. The man is extremely opiniated and downright offensive whenever he is called on to discuss the fortunes of LFC for the last 2 seasons..... Generally being a tw@t.... so much so that I've taken to muting the broadcast whenever he opens his damn mouth.....

Not to be hypocritical or anything as I've also expressed displeasure at how we've been playing but hang it all..... that's in a forum full of liverpool fans who all understand the frustration that we're feeling at the mo....

I'm taking stick from fellow brits (who just happen to be scum fans) that even our illustrious ex-player thinks we're :censored:.... and let me tell you, that's hard to swallow.....

You'd think some loyalty is in order. After all we're the club that made him his name and fortune. By all means criticize if he must but for crying out loud.... don't tear into us like we're completely worthless!!! At least not to the general public... he's got a massive audience and like it or not, has an enormous influence over the hearts and mind of people who view the program....

Some of his points are valid and I agree with them but the way he says them really gets to me.....

I really expect more from an ex-captain.....

IDIOTA!!!....  :veryangry  :veryangry

Anyone else out of our former players doing the same back home??

Lawro and Tommy Smith have been having a go at rotation and the fighting spirit of the lads in the Echo these past few days.  And, Lawrenson, in particular, has been banging the anti-rotation drum loudly all season from what I've read online.

It kind of gets on my t!ts as well...not the public criticism per se but the implied, "in my day" tone to it all.  These fellas were Anfield legends at a time when squad rotation was unheard of and they had tremendous success so it's easy to say these ex-pros know what they're talking about.  But, the game was a lot slower then and the tactics were different so it's not a particularly fair comparison.

And, sometimes, they just seem to get it wrong: Smith was going on today about playing Sissoko in the holding midfield role rather than letting him roam all over the pitch.  Well, feck me, but didn't he roam all over the pitch last season to great effect, winning the ball in advanced positions and helping us really get after teams? :no

I have the utmost respect for Liverpool legends and will be interested to hear anything they have to say about the current side but being an ex-player doesn't automatically make you a particularly astute analyzer of the modern game or our current squad.

But look at those that have a go:

Lawrenson - since playing, cant commentate, just sits on a sofa on bbc1 at 11pm once a week.
McMahon - managed blackpool? Hate sliverpool as we wanna play them in the fa cup (and ive met him, hes a massive cnut
Thompson - unemployable as a manager now, and a little bit bitter.

i watch macmahon on a weekly basis on espn/ star and i think he spot on. he praises us when we do well and crticises the rotation system and the playing of gerrard out of position, most noticebly on the left.

are you suggesting that he makes a fool out if himself and praises us when we are so bad, making people feel that he pro liverpool and anti everyone else.

as a matter of interest he predicted a 2-0 win for manure on sunday and was spot on as he has been with nearly all liverpool predictions this season.

get off his back, they guy is just telling the truth and not wearing his rose coloured glasses, the sad thing is you can see it hurts him.

its amazing the ammount of people posting on here who thinks liverpool are beyond and criticism

i think a lot of u are being extrememly premature in ur statements...

do u think these legends are putting us down because they're enjoying it?

when i hear thompson, lawrenson and hansen bombing on us they sounds blatently upset and fed up with what has become of the club which took them to the top of the world. they sound embarrassed about what's happened at the club and i understand their frustrations.

imagine u'd been part of an organisation u'd given the best years of your life to (be it a work place or anything else u can relate to) and taken it to the top, and a decade down the line, u see the scum that have come in and ruined the foundations of greatness that were in place when u left.... u'd be darn embarrassed and angry and would throw every suggestion possible at them to fix things up again.
we've only won it 5 times

I get to watch McMahon regularly like my mate peewee, as we are in the same parts of the world.

I'm not really a fan of his punditry style, I really like Alan Hansen's very honest style (at least last I saw him in the early 90s, don't know what his punditing style is now as I have no access) and neither do I have any access watching to Lawro. McMahon seems to know  a bit of what's he's talking about and he is entitled to having his own opinions on football having been a sucessful player.

I don't really give a to$$ what pundits like him say, it's always LFC for me.

I guess they call it as they see it--they're being paid for an honest opinion and not blind loyalty yp Liverpool.

They are legends, so get off their back.

While I agree that the old players will probably have a limited grasp of rotation and even modern tactics, I think they fully understand what is required of a team in terms of fighting spirit! When they say a Liverpool team didnt show the right spirit, I am pretty sure they know what they are talking about.

I know the McMahon's, I can remember when my we were at my cousin's christenin in 1995 (his sister is my cousin's mum) and even then he was commentin on how Nigel Clough was being wasted, Steve is an alright bloke really, I used to play footie with him when I was a kid and he was playing for Liverpool, he got me a pair of Johnny Barnes boots which made my year.  At the end of the day all the McMahon's are BIG Evertonians!!
