I think they still do it mate, it just doesn't get talked about as much. In fairness and in actual fact over the last twenty years or so it probably has very slightly diminished as the technique for heading has slightly altered. These days they talk much more specifically about people "attacking" it, whereby much of your momentum and energy is projected out towards the flight of the ball than it is purely upwards.

Blokes like Vidic and Cahill really look to get onto the line of flight of the ball quite early and simply go out along the line to meet it, jumping up and out to get in front of the fella who is hanging and thinking he has it covered. The Denis Law types who would time their jumps perfectly would find the ball getting nicked off their heads these days just as they were flexing the old neck muscles.

A good example of what I'm on about would be Curtis Davis's goal for Villa at Anfield. Here he tracks in early, gets onto the flight of the ball and just manoevres himself into a position in which he is going to intercept its trajectory first.

I still like the old "climbers and hangers" though mate, and I was tempted to give it to Fowler who was another who great in the air for a lad his size. Garcia was a bit tasty too to be fair.

The ghosts of 250 former Red players and a million ex Kopites where holding him up waiting for the ball!  :D
As you say, one of the best hanging headers on record. He probably jumped too early then thought 'Oh sh.t!'

Some great players werent mentioned as yet, Stamina and industry - Sammy Lee, Passing ability - Terry Mac's through balls, Left foot - I repeat Ray Kennedy (what a graceful, wonderful player), Left foot - Ronnie Wheelan, Right foot - Rushie (why not?),

Greatest partnership? Dalglish/Rush or Lawro/Hansen?

I dont know how lads rate Molby over Neal as a penalty taker, Zico always did the biz, including the 77 euro final.

Goalie, its an interesting one, Clem established his reputation as our greatest stopper over amny years, but Reina I suspect is as good. Look at the key saves he made this season already that have ensured we got the full 3 points. 2-3 more seasons and he gets my vote even before Torres gets the nod up front etc..

We only have 3 potential greats in the team at the mo, Reina, Gerr-ad and Torres.

Penalties missed    Neal 13, Molby 3
Penalties scored    Neal 38 , Molby 42

Pretty conclusive that Reg. Admittedly Neal showed he had bottle by taking one in a cup final, but I would still have my money on Molby.

Bugger I spent ages counting the penalties then found a list  :(

Penalties scored
# Player Total
1 Jan Mølby 42
2 Phil Neal 38
3 Billy Liddell 34
4 Tommy Smith 22
5 Robbie Fowler 20
6 Steven Gerrard 19
7 John Aldridge 17
8 Terry McDermott 16
9 Gordon Hodgson 15
10 Michael Owen 13
11 Kevin Keegan 11
12 John Barnes 10

Missed penalties
# Player Total
1 Phil Neal 13
2 Michael Owen 10
3 Tommy Smith 10
4 Billy Liddell 7
5 Kevin Keegan 6
6 Robbie Fowler 6
7 Steven Gerrard 6

Aldridge only ever missed one for us...... but it was a big one

Owen is probably our worst ever regular penalty taker scored 13 - missed 10

Fecking stats   :D Can't believe that about Neal though, feck me I remember him being rock solid from the spot. Just shows you how you look back with the old rose tinted specs I guess.

I suppose its the benefit of scoring on the big occasion rather than missing like Aldridge that decides things in our minds, I thought Neal had a much better record as well mate.

Well I don't know if Toshack was a better header of the ball than Aldridge, because I was too young, but Aldridge was one of the players that attacked the ball aerially best. Certainly top 5 in all time la Liga history on that front.

Very interesting to read this thread, since I could only watch spare games before the internet era. I'm watching some old games now, just for the sake of enjoying Dalglish football. The games of Dalglish should be delivered in schools and make all the kids watch them.
