25mil on...

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Postby lfclfclfc » Sat Jul 09, 2005 9:38 am

It was somewhat estimated that we have an approx of 35mil for transfer at the close season. Diarra hsa gone for 2mil and Diouf a likely 4mil. Unless my mathematics fail me, we should have a rather decent 40mil for transfer. parry has said during the SG saga money for wages is not an issue, and thus far, we have loaned out a number of players + ridding ourselves of some deadwood.

So far, Zenden and Barragan has come in on a free, Reina at 6mil, Gonzalez on loan (prob 2mil if we exercise option to buy). Sissoko deal looks likely at 4-5mil. That adds up to 13mil tops. Even if we end up paying 2mil for figo (which i think we should not), we should have 25mil still at rafa's disposal.

we all know that rafa is not one for big name signings, but that does not mean that he won't, if the right player at the right price comes along. With players like milito (more and more unlikely), crouch, kuyt still linked, how would you spend the 25mil (or is there?  ???) ? 1 swp or 3 couches?

i dont think we really need another striker, we need a right winger and a centre back. i would rather rafa used the money we have to bring in a top quality player

If Baros is not offloaded for anything above 8 million, I'd say keep him and there would not be a need to get another striker. If we do manage to offload him, secure the services of Kuyt for anything around 10 million, maybe offering Dudek or Le Tallec as a part exchange deal. Do not even get me started on Peter Crouch, anything above 5 million for his services is considered a major rip off. By the way, anyone knows for sure which position is imminent signing Mohamed Sissoko most comfortable in?

Talking about a right winger, looks like Luis Figo would fit this category, and we do hope he comes on a free. 2 million for a player that was worth 37 million a couple of years ago  isn't too bad either. As for a center back, I would spend 6 million at most for one, as defenders should not be worth too high a price in my opinion. This player, should this be Upson or Milito, would be used as a immediate backup for Hyypia and Carragher or could be even used as a replacement for slow-paced Hyypia. Remember, we have Traore, Whitbread, and even Hobbs, who all could serve as decently reliable backups. Basically, I'm implying that there is not too much of a desperate need at the moment to purchase a expensive and proven CB.

So by the looks of it, that's around 25 million spent, including the Reina deal.

yes militia, 9 days. but for good o' discussion sake, let's indulge ourselves a little.  :;):

i don't think rafa is hopeful of mounting a serious challenge on the premiership next season (we'll defo close the gap significatly, but to overhaul 37pts in a season, perhaps its a bridge too far)

Rafa's transactions so far points to consolidation, thus in comes players who are perhaps a year or two away from becoming the next vicente, joaquin or aimar - gonzalez, sissoko (i think he is a central mid). I am sure when the squad matures then, he'll add the finishing touches with a 'big-name' or two to move us into top gear.

imo, the 25mil will probably be split 3 or 4 ways for a few 'gems' rather than a star (lets leave figo out, he's suppose to come on a free!) possibly a centre back, a right mid (if nunez leaves),a possible right back (if josemi leaves) and a striker (if Mr Whinny Baros leaves, don't get me started on that as well!). Add a few more youngsters in and we are probably done for the year.

How much would Tim Cahill be worth??? Ranked 20th in the EPL index (Gerrard 28, Carra 27)

Well the fact that we'd have to sign him from Everton would raise the price to ridiculous levels.  I'm sure Rafa will pick up someone similiar in the sense that for extremely little outlay we'll get amazing results.

I would use it to build a squad rather than buy 1 player. I would like:

centre back (as stronger back up than witbread (although i do rate him for the future)
left back (as cover so riise can play in midfield if needed (i rate warnock tho))
Right Mid (as stronger cover than nunez for Garcia)
Striker (as stronger cover than Pongolle (although i rate him for the future)

we have a few good players and with a few seasons sub experience will play an important role in our team especially the three i mentioned above, but we do have a few more that are good like Potter, Raven, Carson and i think LeTallec as well. My opinion tho.

centre backs that can do the job for us: Matty Upson isnt bad, Ledley King or Anthony Gardener are quick and solid and there the english ones, theres a couple he could get in from spain or other countries, I particulary rate Vincent Kompany hes young quicka and talented on the ball. I have to say we were linked with John O'shea even though he is a scummer and a Man USA he is good and would play well here or at left back not worth any more than 4 mil though.

Left backs Wayne bridge from chelsea could be forced out although he is a little injurie prone tho and maybe to good to be a back up for riise.

Right Mids everyone wants shaun Wright phillips (he is awsome but over priced) I say he is worth 10 mil 15 mil at a push then again Joaquin would also cost a lot (possibly worth it though) Maybe Steed Malbranque of fulham he is pretty good and can play out on the right, Wayne Routledge would have been good. Figo could come in as a stop gap for a year then move to bolton but im not sure after that.

Strikers i would bring back michael owen, there is no one with a more proven track record in the premiership and as we apparently have this buy back claus i would have no hesitation in him coming bk to the club. but other than that im not sure anyone you sign is a big risk i might consider Dave Nugent or Dean Ashton but only paying 2 - 3 mil. Cos they both look extremly good. I rate Dean ashton as he has already done well in the premiership but nugent is fantastic in the championship for preston, I would definately move for one or both of them.

we would have a very good and young squad.

We need to invest on one or two quality central defenders(Milito or Ibanez or Upson) and maybe an attacking/central midfield(Pablo Aimar or Tomas Rosicky or Michael Ballack) and a striker(Dirk Kuyt or Pedro Saviola or Julio Baptista).

I think Rafa will have some more signings before the 31st of August.

Rafa said we have 3-4 more players coming in next week and i'm sure he is aware of our defensive frailities, hence he brought in Pelle.  Now he has given Pelle the push, i'm sure he has a replacement lined up.

I think it will be Milto coming in, maybe Figo (if Real stop being bitter over not getting Gerrard) and hpoefully not Crouch.

If we do have 25million available then i think we should get a few good players rather than one world class player.
kuyt/crouch(hopefully not!)-8mil
upson-5mil
sissoko-5mil
