Not posted in here for a while

I have finally managed to get rid of the rootkit (b@stard worm) that was on my comp. Took me 5 days. 3 days removing it, 2 days repairing all the damage done while removing it and about 6 hours wiping my hard drive and making a fresh start.

I wouldn't mind but I had everything backed up and my Acronis failed.

Wasn't a site mate, it was a game I downloaded, I checked it as usual and while there were a couple of things that should have made me think again I was silly enough to press install.

It was like hitting the jackpot at Vegas, lights flashing, bells ringing(not really but it seemed like it at the time lol) warning signs all over my screen.  It had removed all my system restore points and my DVD player.

About 20 various scans later I managed to remove all the warnings etc, but my browser still had a mind of its own.
I finished up running a HJT log  and posting it on a specialised removal forum where I was introduced to some new and "wonderful tools".

Finally I ran Combofix (under instruction from an "expert")which removed all the malware. The only problem with it, is it prevents certain registry entries from working EVER AGAIN. So any cracked OR FREE programs you have on your computer don't work and even if you uninstall them and re-install them they still wont work, and if you try to make them work your computer just freezes and has to be rebooted.

It also installs a secure network (again without asking) and causes all sorts of complications to your internet connection. I don't know which did the most damage the rootkit or the removal tool.

Finally I did what I should have done in the first place .....formatted and reinstalled everything. Which is what I will no doubt do the next time I get a really nasty one.

The truth is I should have had more than one backup and I SHOULD HAVE CHECKED THAT IT WORKED!

I have all my important stuff on external hard drives including applications. If i get anything dodgy i wipe everything and reinstall windows

Best thing you can do and you notice everything quicker and faster
