Most of us have heard the phrase, “He’s so ugly he’s cute….” Well, when it came to Sam, the World’s Ugliest Dog, no one, with the exception of his owner, would ever have used that phrase. No, Sam took “ugly” to levels heretofore unknown among sentient beings. To be truthful, “ugly” didn’t do justice to Sam. “Horrific”, “Apocalyptic”…well, there are words that might approach an accurate description of Sam’s visage, but none adequately express how truly, repulsively ugly Sam was. Of course, being the best at anything will normally gain one a measure of renown, and Sam was no different. His title as “World’s Ugliest Dog” brough him worldwide attention and infamy, and his owner got her 15 minutes of fame, but if there is one thing Sam was, it was UGLY.

Most of us would be repulsed by something that looks like the canine version of Freddie Krueger. I suppose this just goes to illustrate what a bus driver in downtown Portland once told me: “There’s a lid for every pot.” Indeed.

So long, Sam. We hardly knew you…and judging by the pictures, that was probably a good thing.
