The ipad

i just watched the video of the launch/presentation event for the ipad here

its a pretty looong video and steve job's first half hour isn't exactly inspiring. but from about 35 minutes in when some of the app developers come on stage to showcase some of their games and other apps is well worth a look actually. taking the multitouch way of interacting with content which is so beautiful on the iphone and feeding it steroids to allow new ways to play games, paint, navigate etc etc really does look the business. the game playing experience looks really fantastic and i'm not even a big game player.

i'm still not completely convinced by it but i think this thing is going to sell and in a couple of years time, when they've added all the things which are obviously missing, its going to be fukkin huge.

I turned my mobile off for 3 weeks whilst I was in NZ recently and didnt miss the b@stard thing for a moment. I hate this technology that rules your life, I´d be more than happy to go back to the pre-mobile days.

i'm a diehard apple user myself, since about 11 years ago, but i find myself bit by bit falling out of love with them. my current powerbook is the 15" macbook pro and i think its the worst i've ever had. i've never had to send it back (as far too many apple users have to do at some point) but it it often runs like sh!t even with 4 gig of ram in it. i also quite often have to install set ups with new macs and i'm getting increasingly vexed about them changing the connector shape with every new model. costs me a fecking fortune in adaptors and cables - 80 euros for an adaptor and a firewire cable the other day.

and as for this ipad thing, i just don't really get it. it seems to fall between too many stools and i don't think its anywhere near revolutionary enough to begin to shift peoples computer using, media consuming habits in the way that apple want to. i'm hoping i'll get the chance to have a play with one of them soon, for entertainment's sake but i can't think of why i'd want one.

I don't quite get you there bav when you say "my current powerbook is the 15" macbook pro", how can your powerbook be a macbook pro?

Regards it running slow it could be a few things, I have a 15" MBP with 4gb RAM (Intel C2D 2.4) and it runs fine, have you tried backing up your datat via time machine, rebuilding it with a fresh version of OSX and then restoring your data?  :;):

Regards adaptors you should only really need an video output adaptor but you get them with the laptop and you'd need to buy a firewire cable with any laptop be it Apple or Windows.

ok paul, mt fekkin pedantic, i mean my current laptop. i call a mac laptop a powerbook these days just like a call any old vacuum cleaner a hoover. :D

i reformatted the machine about 4 months ago and it runs no better. its been a bit clunky ever since i got it 2 years ago. sometimes you just get a bad one, and sadly i was so busy with work when i got it that i just had to use it.

My whole family has been strictly an Apple family since the late 80s, with one terrible exception that lasted only a year.

Seems to be a bit of a niche product.

Where do they envisage it will be used?

Presumably not at home because most users will also have computers, and presumably not out-and-about because they'll have similarly "magical" phones that are much less cumbersome than this thing.

I guess for people travelling who cant be arsed to take a laptop or even at home maybe casual use on the sofa ect.... But yes it is a niche product. The lack of native USB and HD limit of 64gb is a bit of a turn of for me though.
