all i want to do is share a internet connection that comes in the house by a ntl set top box, will i be able to attatch the two comps to a HUB and then attatch the HUB to the set top box, will that work

every time i go pc world they dnt seem to have a clue other than tryin to sell me the dearest in the store

I've got 2 xboxs a laptop & a pc linked up via ethernet cables to a zoomx5 router/modem(firewalled) but with bt. My cousin has ntl and has an xbox & pc hooked up so I dont foresee a problem( get the right router!!!)

kopite mate........i am sharing a 1mb connection from my ntl box to the computer downstairs.I dont use a hub or router.I have the cable from my set top box going into my usb port on my pc (ntl supply ethernet to usb adapters)then i have normal rj45 ethernet cable in my lan connection and the same cable goes downstairs into the other one.The only  other thing i had to do was use a crossover adapter in the downstairs pc lan socket.
When you have done this on the main pc i.e. mine upstairs you go into you network connections and click share connection.
This enables us to have a 1mb connection on the upstairs and downstairs pc,this is ok as long as the main pc is on.

snd drummer ill try that, so i dnt need networkin cards hubs routers etc

yes you need network cards in both your pcs,most have onboard lan anyway.but in the second pc when you plug the network cable in you will need a crossover adapter which are pence from pc world,maplins etc

Get a wireless router. All units with a wireless receiver will automatically share the connection.

JBG I was just advising on cheapest solution.To be honest with you i tried a router on my ntl box and it was a right pain and after 25 minutes on Ntls tech line i give up.All the ip addresses and dns addresses were correct just couldnt get a website to come up........this way was cheaper and at least it works even though my pc has to be on for the one downstairs to work.

You can pick up a bog standard wireless router and two receiver units relatively cheaply. Anpther plus is that you no longer have annoying cables.

How sh!t is wireless though im currently using it and its a pain in the ar$e when your use to just having your broadband connection, its starting to p!ss me right off, dead slow at times and keeps messin up.

Just bought a new wireless laptop. Have bought a D-link wireless router off ebay (£37) which should let me use the net on the laptop in the living room via the ntl cable modem in the study. Sounds like a piece of but I'll have to wait and see.

my laptop has the built in wireless aerial (or whatever it is in there) and I got a D-Link wireless router (brand new £80 at Dixons but haggled like buggery when I was buying the laptop so got it for f*ck all) and I have no complaints whatsoever - 2meg broadband in the garden, on the bog, in bed.....    f*ckin tremendous

wireless is cheap and extremely easy to use. just make sure the router and modem are turned off occasionally.
