The difficult thing is to know where lies the frontier between irony and sarcasm.

In my language irony is when you do a slight  mockery, and you enter the realms of sarcasm when the mockery is barbed and cruel.

So I like irony, and not that much sarcarsm, but sometimes how offended is the reader is not at your control.

Sarcasm is the highest form of wit, especially when the person you are talking to doesnt understand. Good examples are people on the telephone who complain and i say

"i really understand and I totally agree with you" translation "oh shut it fool"

this is my best post EVER

irony has nothing to do with sarcasm, there is not even a distinction between the two, irony is not mocking anyone, its a situation that is strange as it the opposite of what was expected whereas sarcasm is saying the opposite of what you mean to insult someone

as you say though i think irony has a different meaning in spanish

Ah, that's interesting and good to know

The definition of irony here is your definition of sarcasm, but when you don't intend to do much harm.

That is, saying the opposite of what you think is called irony, and it has a degree of mockery, but it doesn't mean to insult neither. Sarcasm is that, but with more insulting intention.

Irony: "Well I think we can perfectly sell Alonso" obviously I don't think this, but it shouldn't offend anyone, just trying to stress that he's an important player

Sarcasm: If you tell to a man that has lost his job "Well, it's positive now you can have more time for reading", when you don't think it's positive, and he might be offended

Anyhow I appreciate your clarification, I assumed wrongly that as the words are almost the same (ironía, sarcasmo) it meant the same thing.
