Walsall have announced that apprentice Anton Reid has died.

The 16-year-old first-year youth team player  collapsed during a training session at the University of Aston but no details of a cause of death have yet been made public.

A Walsall statement read: "Players and staff have been left heartbroken by this terrible tragedy."

As a mark of respect Tuesday night's Pontin's Holidays League fixture against Wolverhampton Wanderers has been postponed.

The flags at the League One club's Banks's Stadium are also flying at half-mast.

Walsall's statement added: "Our thoughts and prayers are with Anton's parents, family and friends at this very sad time."

Sad news, R.I.P Anton
My thoughts go out to the family

R.I.P. :(

A little comment though, it shocks me how often it happens. I've known not less than 6 identical cases in the last 5 years in my country, it looks like there are some health problems hard to spot beforehand despite controls are done. It surprises me aswell that it happens so often in football, as it's not the most demanding sport training wise.

Same in Ireland. many young lads die playing football or gaelic games in the last couple of years. Something is definately happening but I don't know what.

he had a heart condition, the ball hit him in the chest. it was horrible  seeing my friends/ familty so upset. what makes it even worse is that it was his birthday a few days later an he was going to get his GCSE results.

when i was 13 (some 27 yr ago now), we were playing a football match against a local school. My best mate chris suddenly dropped to the floor. medics rushed over but he'd already gone :(

he had that rare sudden heart failure disease thats almost impossible to detect until after an attack

RIP Chris mate. Still think of the laughs we had at school

Alot of youngsters are just dieing i live in ireland and 3 yougsters died in a week from just collaspsing ....

Its a pity to hear cos they were so young ....

In one case the youngster drank an energy drink at the beginning of his training so it could be making the heart go even faster than it should ??? ???
