Former Liverpool boss Gerard Houllier has found another reason for the Reds' poor displays under him. He believes he should have taken more rest after his heart surgery and that he returned to work too soon.

The Frenchman, who ended his six-year reign at Anfield this summer, said both he and the club paid the price for his swift comeback after going under the surgeon's knife in 2001.

"My one regret about the six seasons I spent with Liverpool is that I returned too soon after my heart operation," Houllier said.

"It had been five months since I handed over to Phil Thompson, and before we played Roma in a Champions League game I thought I'd give the team an extra one per cent of energy if I sat on the bench."

"That is what happened, as we won 2-0. But my mistake was to not take a break after that match."

"We finished the season second in the Premiership with 80 points. But I was tired, and I think we paid the price the following season."

Would'nt really see it as another excuse we done great that season I think he is just thinking of fond memories. Everyone needed a change at Anfield it was getting everyone down even the players. Lets move on now with our new boss and players and be happy with the progress we are seeing.
I thank Houllier for our good times but thats in the past everyone needs to move on. And thats what we are doing.

Well in this case i thinks it well justified.
i dont think he was same manager after that and its certainly a better excuse then the it was/wasnt a penatly, it was/wasnt offside, the linesmen/ref cost us the match stuff that was coming out with regular monotny last season

the whole emotion of that night at home to roma detracted from the real issue. i was in the kop that night and when houllier returned whilst "you'll never walk alone" boomed around the ground i was in tears.

his heart ruled his head in a way and who could blame him? when i saw the video of the game afterwards, you could see that he looked a shadow of his former self. he was really pale and looked quite weak and fragile.

unfortunately, a couple of weeks later, after the leverkeusen defeat, houlliers reign went downhill and petered out to a sad end.

gone, but never forgotten.
