Fair play - Is it a level playing field?

International Football/Football World Wide - General Discussion

Just watching the replay of the Australia v Brazil match..Some of the decisions made against Australia is CRIMINAL!!! The foul count alone was 25:9. That is just unheard of unless there is some serious foul play afoot.

During the match Mark Viduka (as Australia's captain) was berated by Marcus Merk (referee) for asking questions, which he's entitled to do.

Have a look at some of the decision made specifically against Viduka especially with Viduka as the front player.

I ask you, has Brasil's winging and whining prior to this tournament about Australia's 'dirty' tactice paid off?? Do the referees now look closer at Australia's tackles than anyone elses?? Or has money exchanged hands to ensure the like of Viduka has a 'quiet one'??

Is my paranoia showing??    :D

I'm just asking for a fair go. Do the 'lesser' known footballing nations cop a raw deal in favour of the more 'established' nations??  If so what, and how, do you become a recognised 'player' on the world stage?

I think it is time to introduce a second referee to the playing field!!

TBH i have to say Brad with all due respect...........Get over it  :)

There is no doubt IMO that some of mind games played before the tourney about our physical approach played dividends. However as Guus even said the Ref's decisions did affect the outcome of match so im rather not dwell on it as I think it detracts from our great performance.
It may also end up doing us a favour  in our next match as these things tend to balance out

Vince Grella summed it up perfectly for me at end of match

The Ref is always right even when he is wrong  :D

Yeah, fair comment. Point taken. :)

Just trying to ensure an even playing field. I hate seeing the little guy getting beaten up by the bully boys...always have, always will!!!    :eyebrow

Disagree with the two refs idea, football is fine the way it is IMO. The two linesman and the referee do a good enough job the majority of the time IMO.

Laza mentioned Vince Grella ,well he's lucky to be even playing against Croatia TBH - It didn't all go aganst Australia. Although Merk was over protective of Ronaldinho and the likes.

It was an odd situation though...Merck by most accounts is one the best refs in the world and, as a German, is probably more comfortable with physical play.  I mean, we're not talking about the England-Paraguay game where the Mexican ref with the bad gel job booked Crouch and Gerrard for being over-physical.  That was a situation where decisions went against the more established world power (hard to type that on current form :D ) but can be explained because the Mexican ref comes from a league (and a Latin American football tradition) where physical play is less tolerated.  Merck, however, should be well comfortable with some amount of contact and thus should have cut the Aussies some slack.  I'm not saying there's a conspiracy (you do sound a bit paranoid LH! :D ) but it does seem the World Champs got a few extra breaks.
