Don't get all the criticism for Ben. He's barely getting any playing time lately. There's no way he has any confidence, and I thought he played really well considering. Obviously he should've done better with some of his chances, but the keeper made a few fantastic saves in the first half on him that in another day would end up in the back of the net. Him and Sturridge have played 5 minutes together and already look like they can be a dangerous pair.

Give him a proper run in the team and I'm confident we'll start to see more of the old.

We should have buried them. I know we missed a lot of chances but we did play some good footy at times. With quick strikers on tne pitch it makes a massive difference. Origi, Ben and studge showed good signs together.

If we keep our players fit im confident we will give Europa a good effort.

F**k this is depressing......

I thought there were a lot of positives to take from that game myself, when I saw the team sheet I thought we were going to get battered but the young lads did themselves proud.

It goes a bit beyond that Yakka.  I'm talking long term here.

In order for us to win any trophies we need a strong squad. Can't fault the kids here for giving it their all but now fingers needed to be pointed at the mediocrity of our current squad and the rubbish we have on our books. After 5 years (coming up to 6) we are no better off on the field and FSG are fully responsible for this garbage.

I find it incredibly ironic that a lot of people seem upset on ticket prices rising but become completely apathetic at the quality of our football side. What did you expect from these parasites?  They are here to make money of you, me and everyone else that loves this club. They don't care whether we win trophies or have success on the field. Or else they would have started addressing this fundamental issue a long time ago. Since little Luis moved on and Stevie G played his last game this club has descended into a lifeless shell of what use to be.

The final insult is these FSG ***** wanting to make even more money off proud and passionate supporters across the world. And then having the gall to tell us we risk losing our club if we don't pay their extortion money.  :no

I only want to talk about the match and the players involved in the match, because this is a match thread

In the cold light of day this morning of course i am disappointed but there were definitely many positives from the match

The young lads were excellent too many to list here, Lucas played very very well at centre back, Sturridge / Coutinho / Origi all getting much needed game time after lengthy injuries

The difference between losing and not winning this match can be placed purely at the poor finishing, everybody "who watched the match" has stated here that some of the 8 or more chances not taken by Benteke were criminal, had he put away just 1 or 2 of them we are in the next round

But i take many positives from this match

Not a bad performance.  Had our chances which we didn't take and ultimately paid the price by conceding through another set piece. I think going forward we are up there with the best in the league when all our players are fit however defensively we always leave the door open and let teams in. This has been a problem for a while now. Even when we just missed out winning the league,  we were shipping so many goals but just out scoring the oppo. However that formula is not going to bring sustained success

Don't quite understand all the doom and gloom?
We went to one of the hardest stadiums with a few senior players and a few kids, who played a good game.
Big Ben didn't take his chances, but at least he was giving some ammo to shoot with. If anything he was as surprised as I was with the amount of chances he got.
Striker needs to be in the right place to miss - and last night he was in position. So I'll give credit where it's due.
---
Re; The game - West Ham got a little retribution last night after the Gerrard Cup Final when their first piece of silver for how many years was snatched away with a moment of pure genius.
---
The little magician is back and played a decent game and so was Sick Note, who also had a very good run out.
---
My cups half full - even tho it's not the FA Cup this year....
Villa away next and I hope JK to bring some of the kids along, who have shown great bottle over the two game against WH.
---
We go again!

injuries have f**ked us to be fair, it's been a disappointing season but you can't tell me that if we'd had Sturridge and Coutinho available that things wouldn't have panned out differently.

Stewart ran his @rse off as did Smith who reminds me a bit of Alan Kennedy.
As I said plenty of positives to take from that game, not least the return of Sturridge and Coutinho.

"Missed a few sitters" is unacceptable for a striker ,sorry mate ,it's horrendous. It's like a GK dropping balls into his net.
Benteke lost us the game it's simple as that.

I'm not saying he didn't, but for the first time since he's been here he actually looked like a 'Klopp' player, instead of just standing there like a lamppost he worked his @rse off yesterday, he tracked back, closed people down, won the ball back high up the pitch and still managed to get on the end of chances.
At one point he even tracked right back to the edge of our box and gave a West Ham player a sly nudge in the back just as he was taking a shot, he must have ran 50 or 60 yards just to get a challenge in.
Yes his finishing was awful but that can happen when a striker is low on confidence but his goal ratio over his whole career proves that he knows where the net is, we aren't talking about a Borini here, Benteke is a proven goalscorer.
Maybe the penny is finally starting to drop, if he continues to work that hard I'm sure the goals will come. I'd pretty much written him off but last nights performance has given me food for thought.

When you make 10 changes against a team that has already handed our first XI it's @rse twice this season then admittedly expectations were low going into the game but for once this football club punched above its weight last night.
Am I happy that we went out? No, of course not, but I also recognise when a team has given everything it's got, that wasn't a Newcastle or Watford type performance, the lads went out on their shields last night.

I thought it'd go to pen's when Klopp took off Courtinho for some bizzare reason but everything he does/says baffles me so I shouldn't be surprised. We needed a goal and he hooked the one player who look likely to get another one or create one.

strange

There is way to much pessimism on this site... come on we all knew this would be a season where the new manager (whom we are very lucky to have) would use what was left to assess performance of the entire squad, hence trying out all the youngster's, like giving all the first team players a run

He tried to get Markovic back from his loan but due to contractual issues it was not possible, he pulled most other loans that were possible back to the club as well so that he could assess them also

Short term suffering (this season) will be worth it in the long run, he is still using Rodgers squad

There will be a big clear out in the summer, he will bring in some new players, judge him at the end of next season

Bad result really and the idiot referee was quite awful, it was no free kick!, however all the credit goes to the younger players, they all have showed character and strong desire to win and be counted, which it is not so with most senior players!
It was only for the useless Bebteke we could have won 1-4  easily, He is really a bad finisher, and as I have said before that he needs 10 good chances before he convert one chance, having said that in fairness he did work hard in match, but he could have done much more, he only can alive when other two strikers were working beside him, and he was effective at Villa only when other striker was working beside him, He is that type of player.. A special thanks goes to the idiot BR.

Smith should be No.1 left back, and Flanagan right back, Moreno and Clyne ought be a back up.
A special mention to Ilori who I thought he was excellect, clam defender worthy of first team football, he is certinally better than Sakho who is very clumsy and ball watcher. Once again Lucas was man of the match. The same player that the idiot BR wanted to sell him!!.
