VS
Birmingham Sh!ty VS Liverpool
I started the thread for this fixture last season with the table throwing tale. Well I have another tale from my trips to the home of Noddy Holder and Spagetti Junction.
It was a rainy night and we (my band) were on our way to a gig at a pub in Birmingham. We'd got into Birmingham town centre but could not find the venue. We travelled up and down loads of streets but could we find it? could we chuff. So I spotted a tramp slumped in the doorway of a shop and thought 'if anyone knows where the fecking pub is it'll be the local p!sshead lol'. So I pulled the van up at the side of the road and got out and walked over to the drunken scruff...
Me : "scuse me fella, do you know where the White Horse pub is?"
He looked at me rather vacant and muttered "ya what?"
Me : "The White Horse pub mate, I can't find it, do you know where it is?"
He had got to his feet by now and was swaying to and fro. He looked left and raised a crooked finger then look right and pointed there too then looked at me and said "hang on a minute, wait there"
He then staggered over to our van and through the open drivers window slurred "do you know where the white horse pub is?"
My mate : "we're going there!"
Drunk : "well will you give this lad a lift... he can't find it."
I got back in the van, thanked him and we fuked off.
We found the White Horse, did the gig, I got the sh!ts from an iffy kebab and our drummer broke his crown on a peanut.
The match
Really shouldn't cause us much trouble. I expect attacking footie all game. Maybe a Gerrard/Meireles midfield pairing? Konchesky making his first team debut and Torres knocking in a brace.
Brumm 0 - 2 LFC (Torres 2)

I'm going down for this, which is probably the kiss of death given our performances away from home last season when I went to watch us. It's a sh#thole of a ground and the ticket prices are a scandal.
They're also a bogey side for us. We've not beaten them in the League since 2004. That has to change sometime. 2-1 to us.

Firstly I thought Bermenstein did the match threads. What is going on?
Secondly -
I want us to persist with 4-4-2, for the following reasons -
1. Gerrard's natural position is in the centre of a 4-4-2.
2. The games so far do not show the formation won't work, especially considering we have not played new signings in this formation yet.
3. It is Hodgson's known formation, why tinker with a system you know for a system you don't.
Reina
Johnson Carragher Agger Konchesky
Maxi Gerrard Meireles Babel
Torres Ngog
Stable.
Reina
Johnson Carragher Agger Konchesky
Kuyt Gerrard Meireles Babel
Cole
Torres
Ideal.

We have no kuyt and babel has shown on many occasions he cant play left midfield and the players we do have dont set up for a 4-4-2 .
As for Gerrard - John Barnes got it right during the week - if you want to get the best out of gerrard ie the goalscoring , creating , crossing etc then he cant play cm - if you want him to sit and be steady then he plays cm - playing gerrard cm you take so much out of his game you have to have players that can fill that void . Gerrards best season have been when he hasnt played CM .

Play 4-4-2 and we'll lose. We don't have the personnel for it.
Hope we can nick a win in this fixture though!

yeah a team we haven't beaten in the league since 2004. they also haven't lost at home for a year. we don't just have a divine right to go there and win.

Courtesy of Wikipedia. Steven Gerrard's statistics in terms of goals only shows he will score goals wherever he plays. It is only between 2008-2010 he has played behind Torres, under Benitez. Prior to that he played centrally and wide right and scored a similar quantity of goals.
His true assets of breaking down defence comes when he attacked from deep. His recent displays for England show this, as do some of his finest performances in a Liverpool shirt.
I have heard vastly more commentators advocating the use of Gerrard in a central role, "where he is most dangerous" than behind a front man.

The two seasons he played in CM from those stats are the ones where he did play CM 04-05 and 06- 07 the others seasons he was higher up the pitch and scores bundles - he is still great in CM but you lose so much of his game if you sit him deep .

No no I agree that they arent going to be easy, and I dont expect us to go there with the divine right to win.
But saying we will lose against birmingham because our personnel cant handle 4-4-2 is a bit silly no?

I am not in the Country for this one (HOLIDAYS ) ,so I might have to find a local bar to watch this one, but I would take an ugly 0-1 win for the reds ....definitely the perfect game to include Poulson who should play directly in front of the back four ..would also seriously like Soto to play in our back line to deal with the aerial threat of Zigic.... I don't think it will be pretty but I still fancy The Lads to snatch a win
COME ON THE RED MEN ........
