We did everything but score first half, although we did look like we might get exposed at the back by being a bit too cavalier in approach. Kuyt's was probably the best chance, hard for him to hit that any better than he did given the circumstances. Voronin's wasnt' a great finish, but I would have taken him off at half-time, nay, I'd probably not even have started him. N'Gog had two goals in his previous two appearances, was absent on Saturday and then on the bench today. Torres' shot was straight at the keeper, I think it was because of the angle he was to the ball making it harder to hit it hard and give it direction.

I disagree that there was nothing wrong with Rafa's substitutions, they were typically belated and not reacting to how the game was going (goalless) or how poorly people were playing (eg Voronin) In a 'must win' game you expect managers not to let games drift, our's does. Sure we might have been battering down the door, but you can still bring on players who are more likely to score or increase the prospect of scoring (than Voronin) It can also bring players more into the game who aren't necessarily having a bad game, but perhaps might be more influential if moved eg take Voronin off, bring on Babel and swap him with Benayoun.

As for qualification

1. Lyon P4 W3 D1 L0 PTS 10 (Q)
2. Fiorentina P4 W3 D0 L1 PTS 9
3. Liverpool P4 W1 D1 L2 PTS 4

We should win in Hungary. Both Fiorentina and Lyon won there, but we only won 1-0 at home while those two have scored 13 goals in three games against Debrecen. We need Lyon to draw with Fiorentina or beat them, if both Lyon and ourselves beat Fiorentina then we go through, if Lyon draw with Fiorentina then we need to win by THREE CLEAR GOALS - obviously we have to hope Lyon draw with them. Otherwise all a win in Debrecen would mean is we play in the UEFA mickey mouse version of the Champions League and the comparison with Houllier and 02/03 is all too real.

I really can't see Lyon winning in Italy so the best i'm hoping for is a draw and then, who knows, perhaps another truly famous night in the history of this great club beckons!?! To need to win by 3 clear goals in our final game and actually go and do it would be incredible.

Not quite. Why on earth would you want Lyon to draw with Fiorentina??

Assuming we beat Debrecen (who knows nowadays), we need Lyon to BEAT Fiorentina. Which will leave the gap between ourselves and Fiorentina to two points going into the final game against them.

Voronin is clearly cack but Rafa had other options. He had Ngog on the bench, who clearly would of known the opposition.

He could of played Benayoun behind Torres, as in the Man U game.

04/05

Liverpool 2-1 Monaco
Monaco 1-0 Liverpool
Liverpool 0-0 Deportivo
Deportivo 0-1 Liverpool
Olympiacos 1-0 Liverpool
Liverpool 3-1 Olympiacos

We lost two then and drawn one, same as this year. :;):

MADRID HERE WE COME!

It's to do with our results against Fiorentina though, as they beat us 2-0 in Italy if we end up on level points with them a 3-0 win at Anfield would be enough to give us the edge as we have a better record - in our games against them.
Effectively though it's not in our own hands and you could argue Fiorentina are the form side in the group, I can't see Lyon winning there, a draw may be the best we can hope for and besides we don't seem to be able to keep a clean sheet against anyone at the moment!

You mean the Dossena who is still playing for Italy?

Come on lad - he's a good player but he can't get used to the league - and £7m is f*cking peanuts nowadays anyway. :no

Would that be the Italy who were completely muck down in South Africa recently ?
Or the Italy that somehow contrived to win their World Cup group this year, purely on the basis of the fact that the rest of the teams were even worse that they were (my own bleedin' country included !) ?
Dossena is awful, but that's not what this post or thread is about. It's about wasting money and being left with knee-jerk signings like Zorba who ONCE, almost gifted a goal, and TWICE fell like a sack o' spuds with two players clear in on goal....

Is "muck" today's key word?

You're overreacting - accept we drew away from home despite clearly being the better team throughout due to a defensive error.

People seem to forget that Lyon are a very good side and we are still knackered with injuries.

Nah mate, "muck" is a word I use purely because other expletives will be blanked - I'd prefer to lapse deep into the vernacular but a) I don't want me kids reading 'em, and b) eferybody knows what I mean anyway...

Lyon weren't particularly good last night, pretty toothless for the most part you'd have to say. Unfortunately we also had the "bunny in the headlights" look in front of goal as well - Voronin the key culprit...

Yes we had a couple of injuries, but I believe it's just a couple. Whether Rieira was fit or not, would he have replaced Benayoun ? Granted Johnson would most likely have played. Gerrard too.....But who else as missing  - was Skrtel guaranteed to play if Agger and Carra were in centre of defence ? Was Aurelio guaranteed to play ?
I think we're talking about max 2 key injuries, that's it..

The lads coming on in leaps and bounds, fantastic.

As is Lucas. He's really starting to impress me lately. He's been getting the run of games he's needed to develop, and it's showing in his last few performances.

???

Lucas was great last night, as was Masch.

Voronin was the only player who really dissapointed me, he is just awful. Rafa got the tactics right tonight because we bossed them but he shouldnt of started with Voronin.

And no Aquilani?  :sniffle

Having said all this though we made a good effort and didnt deserve to loose, maybe we will get some good luck on our side for once and fiorentina will get beat.

still really frustrated, mainly by the manner of the goal we conceded having defended really well for 89 minutes. i mean over the two games i though lyon were really poor and yet they've scored two last minute goals that have cost us 3 points in the group. it looks like they may win the group and yet they haven't got a hope in hell's chance of winning the chamnpions league.

the performance was much improved though. if only we'd taken our chances. i suppose we were just unfortunate that the best chances fell to the wrong players.
