Van Gaal's been eyeing the Borussia Dortmund defender for months and now the Germans have approached the Kop about his potential replacement

Manchester United are closing in on a deal for Germany World Cup winner Mats Hummels - with help from arch-rivals Liverpool.

Louis van Gaal’s chase for Borussia Dortmund centre-half Hummels was back on late Thursday evening with the two clubs near to agreement on a £20million switch.

And the Old Trafford giants’ chances have been massively boosted as the Bundesliga side opened talks with Liverpool about borrowing their young Portuguese defender Tiago Ilori.

The 21-year-old would be loaned to Dortmund for the season as Hummels’ replacement - a move that the Reds' manager Brendan Rodgers would allow.

Ilori was signed from Sporting Lisbon a year ago and loaned out to Spanish side Granada for experience in January. But he made only nine starts for them, and is still just short of being a first-team starter.

Liverpool would be happy to see him play in the fast, physical Bundesliga - even if it means old foes United benefit in the short term.

The fact that Dortmund have begun work on a replacement for Hummels is a major lift for United, who badly need a senior defender and have been chasing the 25-year-old for months.

Dortmund traditionally only allow one big-name player to leave each season and striker Robert Lewandowski has already moved to Bayern Munich, but United are chasing hard.

Van Gaal has admired Hummels for years. The coach admits his squad needs brains at the back and he would be ideal for his needs.

United have the cash available to close the transfer and this breakthrough is a decisive turn for better as their new manager puts a new side - and formation - together.

You just know what the answer would be if Ferguson was in Rodgers position.

Who's to say he would not do the same. I am sure many teams would take him on loan, so we really don't need Dortmund unless Reus is involved.

That's what I'm saying Kazza, there would be no way that Ferguson would loan out a player if it helped Liverpool sign a quality player.

Even if it meant Reus coming?

Liverpool are believed to be readying an £18m bid for Paris Saint-Germain's Ezequiel Lavezzi, amid reports he's set to leave the French club.

Arsenal and Chelsea have also been linked with the Argentine international, who is said to favour a move to Italian giants Juventus over the Premier League.

But according to the Independent, the Reds are said to be prepared to try their luck by imminently offering £18m for the 29-year-old, who has only been with PSG for two seasons.

The Parisian outfit are ready to listen to offers for the forward, as boss Laurent Blanc remains determined to bring in Angel Di Maria from Real Madrid, but must offload players to do so.

Rodgers is said to be keen to get the ball rolling on the deal, as he wants to give any new players as much time as possible to integrate into the squad before the new season gets underway.

Reuss won't be coming mate, the signings of Moreno and Manquillo will take us over the £100m mark, if we buy Reuss as well that would be £150m spent in one window! Can't see us spending that much in one go.
Besides if Reuss became available there would be a lot of big wealthy clubs in for him, loaning Dortmund a back up CB wouldn't be enough to tilt the deal in our favour.

Get these full backs in and I'll be happy. We still need a striker but in general things will look a lot brighter for the squad

Liverpool and Manchester United are set to increase their interest in Borussia Dortmund attacker Marco Reus after learning that the German side had identified a replacement for him, according to the Metro.

Both sides have been heavily linked with the German international for some time now, and will now step up their efforts to bring him to the Premier League after learning that Dortmund are keen to bring Roma's Adem Ljajic to take his place.

Ljajic is reportedly unhappy with the Italian side and Dortmund will be keen to test the waters with an enquiry to see if they can twist his arm into pushing through a move.

Reus reportedly rejected a new deal with Dortmund last week, with his current contract with the German giants set to expire in 2017.

And although the club have been quiet on whether they will entertain bids for the player, his agent has recently talked up the rumours linking with a move to England.

"Marco would make any big European team stronger," Dirk Hebel said.

"That's why it's completely normal that a number of these major European teams are interested in signing him."

Rumour has it that Dortmund would be willing to part with Reus for a fee in the region of £50m as they fear losing him for half that next summer.

He certainly looks a lot more composed in front of goal than he did at the start of last season. He may well end up there but we need someone more established imo

I can't see this one happening either mate, £18m is still quite a lot of money for a 29 year old who plays in a position (wide forward) where we are pretty much stacked with talent.

@skyjamiecasey

#LFC have been trimmed from 11/8 to 6/5 favourites to sign Marco Reus after a handful of big bets today. #MUFC now out to 8/1, Bayern 16/1

I have a strong feeling we're gonna pull this signing out of the bag. I've seen alot of Utd fans mocking and belittling us over even attempting to buy him... which makes no sense with us being able to offer CL football and them being able to offer him nothing.

Borini and Agger out leaves us the £27m we need to buy out his release clause .. so fingers crossed.
