Rafa Benitez wants Wigan's Emile Heskey back at Liverpool  By DAVID MADDOCK 25/12/2008

Liverpool will launch their bid to bring Emile Heskey back to Anfield next Thursday.

The Merseyside club will offer a ‘take it or leave it’ fee of £4million for the England striker when the transfer window opens on January 1.

Manager Rafa Benitez wants cover for his strikers, and also the problem right-wing berth, and sees Heskey as the perfect cut-price option.

Liverpool have little or no money to spend in the transfer window, but Heskey is out of contract in the summer and Wigan will reluctantly cash in now to ensure they don’t lose him for nothing.

Manager Steve Bruce has spoken of demanding a big fee for the striker but the reality is that he has hardly played for Wigan this season, and the Latics boss will take what he can get to fund some of the fee required to make Amir Zaki's a permanent move.

Liverpool will face competition from Aston Villa for the striker's services, but Heskey has already indicated that he wants to go back to Anfield to rejoin the club he supported as a boy.

If the Merseyside club can get Heskey for £4m then a deal is a real possibility because they haven't given up hope of recouping that figure by shipping Jermaine Pennant out in the transfer window.

Doesnt score that many goals but is a nuisance for defenses and will help Keane an awful lot as a target man.

Well if we are to go for heskey for 4 million , i'd rather buy owen who's more potent . Heskey goal scoring record is absurd but he has a very good target man and could be a perfect partner for torres .

No please no more could be good target men. Why the :censored: cant we just spend he money on Owen ffs. This will be a step back imo. Emile heskey? wtf We should have just kept Crouch then at least he scored goals too!!!!!!

Baffling to be honest, yes, a target man, but surely there are better target men in the market? ???? ????? ???

It was Crouch's decision to leave, Rafa likes to have a target man.

But surely there are better target men than heskey!

Do we really need someone who's best skill is falling on his erse??

I think not. If Rafa has £4million to spend there must be someone out there more useful to us than Emile.

Before we know where we are Rafa'll be bringing IGOR back!!!

Yes. There are better target men out there but Heskey is the only one that we can afford. I don't mind as long as we have somebody who's different than our current strikers. As much as i like crouch, he chose to leave. So we need another one who can operate at least a little bit like him.

p.s . I didn't like Heskey back then and i don't know if i'm gonna like him or not if he's back.

Heskey will be a good partner for Keane if Torres gets injured again. Gives us something a little different to what we have already. I would support this move if it's £4m

I just don't like the idea of picking up a 30y/o sub standard player because he's cheap. I'd much rather wait until we could afford a decent target man and make do with what we have for now. Or alternatively sell Babel and chase someone a bit more quality like Santa Cruiz or the guy from Benfica (Cardozo?).

anyone is better than the big gaping hole we have now.

i would support the signing of heskey, he'll bring a different option upfront.
although the £4m thats being said i think is a bit to much for a player who's contract is nearly up.
maybe exchange pennant in a straight swap?

Apparently the Chelsea players want Drogba out. I know he won't be coming here but I would LOVE it if he did. I know his a diving c*nt but sh!t he fits a need, exactly what we need.

i can honestly say i'd HATE it if we signed drogba.
top footballer he may be, but he is also a :censored: of the highest order!
don't need players with the attitude that he has at this club!
