on football 365 they're now sayign that not being able to afford Barry or Riera we're now looking at 12m for Downing. Now i can't say i've seen a huge amount of him but when he came on for england last night he seemed one of the few that really tried to attack the game, beat his man, and get a good cross in. Now i don't think Barry has this in his locker on the left but maybe Downing wouldn't be a bad option to have.

Any thoughts?

He's a good player but i don;t think boro will let him go for anything less than 15 million . We need a winger and he fits the bill nicely , plus he's young and has the time to improve

Agreed. Natural left sided winger, likes to put plenty of crosses in (good quality crosses) and can score a few goals.

I'd be happy forgetting the Barry/Riera rumours and go get Downing. That would then release Babel to play upfront or right hand side where I think he's far more comfortable.

My team (if we get Downing) -

Pepe

Carra
Skrtel
Agger

Downing/Babel
Gerrard
Mascha
Alonso
Babel/Kuyt

Keane/Babel/Kuyt
Torres

With the likes of Yossi, Plessis, Lucas + the kids we have plenty MF and attacking options!

so much :censored: in the press at the moment about how much money we have,  you would think some of these sources balance our books...

i still think we will bring in a quality left winger before the end of the window...

the only way the barry deal will happen is if villa  come to us with a cut down price...

i havent seen enough of stuart downing  not sure if he is good enough for liverpool fc,  but i could be wrong  ???

Until the Alonso rumours disappear I'm not convinced the Barry deal is dead!! I think there might be a little twist before next Monday.

Riera may not be final arrival
Aug 27 2008 by Ian Doyle, Liverpool Daily Post

ALBERT RIERA is expected to become a Liverpool player by the end of the week.

And the Spain international left winger may not be the final arrival at Anfield before the transfer window closes on Monday evening.

Liverpool have agreed a fee in excess of £8million with Espanyol after Riera expressed his desire to link up with Rafael Benitez.

Everton had attempted to hijack the deal with a higher bid, but talks between Anfield and Espanyol officials have since agreed on a compromise figure.

Liverpool are now hopeful of completing the transfer in the next few days, with Espanyol sporting director Paco Herrera revealing only a few minor details need to be ironed out.

“This is a sensitive time, and we need to make sure we reach a solution,” he said.

“Everything is going well and a deal can be reached. The differences we have are ones we can solve and there has to be a solution because there is no more time.”

With the Riera deal imminent, Benitez will consider further bolstering his squad in the coming days.

The Liverpool manager must sell before he can buy, and is willing to listen to offers for Andriy Voronin, Jermaine Pennant and Steve Finnan.

Xabi Alonso could also be allowed to depart, but interested clubs – which include Arsenal – would need to lodge a big-money bid.
