Liverpool are reported to be lining up a move for Athletic Bilbao defender Fernando Amorebieta.

Reports emanating from Spain suggest Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez is keeping tabs on the highly-rated defender.

The Reds are believed to have watched the 22-year-old on a couple of occasions this season as they ponder making a number of transfer forays in January.

Benitez has admitted he is considering adding to his squad when the transfer window reopens and defensive reinforcements are believed to be his top priority.

The Reds are short of cover in defence after failing in their pursuit of Gabriel Heinze and Amorebieta's versatility makes him an attractive proposition.

Bilbao are keen to keep hold of Amorebieta, but the player could find it hard to resist the opportunity to become the latest player to join the Spanish contingent at Anfield.

Anyone know anything about this guy?

He's 6'3" so presumably he's a CB that can play Full Back.

How many full backs can you name that are 6'3"  ? I can name quite a few CB'S that are. Just playing the percentages mate  :D

WHAT?

He's shíte!!!

I mean, it's not anti Bilbao bias, I've known great players from that club, but he's SHÍTE. :O As in, completely useless, as in, play Hobbs rather than him!

Wait, now I'm recovered from the shock. Amorebieta was the defender of the team that received most goals in the liga yesteryear, and he has been replaced this year by a couple of urgently needed signing backs in the back.

Amorebieta is not good enough for Liverpool. Nor for City, nor for Tottenham, not for Sunderland.

I see what you mean, it was just the fact that it doesnt say he can play in any partcular position...just that he is a versatile defender. I suppose that speaks for itself really and i am being a bit slow  :D

Hello, I'm from Spain and I'm a fan of the Athletic.

Fernando Amorebieta is one of the best defence in the Liga. He has good air game, great potency, lot of concentration, great leg left and lot of future because only has 22 years. In adition, he can play in the lateral.

Amorebieta has been spied by Luis Aragones (trainer of Spain) but I don't think that he will go to Eurocup.

He cost 30M€ and I hope that he isn't sold for less.

Sorry for my bad english :D
