Cheyrou is believed to have caught the eye of Rennes manager Pierre Dreossi and Ouest France claim the player could sign later this week.

The 28-year-old has long been deemed surplus to requirements at Anfield after Rafa Benitez succeeded Gerard Houllier as manager of the club in the summer of 2004.

Signed by Houllier for a fee of £3.7 million from Lille, Benitez never took to the player and he was allowed to join Marseille on loan in July 2004.

Cheyrou returned to The Reds last summer, but promptly pitched up in Ligue 1 once more, this time agreeing a season-long deal with Bordeaux.

Girondins are unlikely to press ahead with a permanent transfer, however, and that could leave the way clear for Rennes to tie up a deal.

It's not his fault he's sh.it, it's our previous manager who thought he was getting 'the new Zidane'. Apparently when Benitez took charge at LFC he asked to see the scouting tapes of Cheyrou, but there were none. Houllier hadn't properly researched the player. And now we're still paying financially for his mistake :no

First Troare being linked with a move away and now Cheyrou, what is Rafa playing at? There the next Desailly and Zidane, what next, Diao who is the next Viera going to leave? Rafa is dismantling a team of Zidanes and Desiallys!

Houllier must have told Liverpool board you dont need to scout France I know all the best players in France and the board were daft enough to believe him. I cant believe we bought so much :censored:

Liverpool midfielder Bruno Cheyrou has agreed to join Rennes after spending the last two years on loan in France.
The 28-year-old ex-France international was signed by Gerard Houllier from Lille in the summer of 2002 but never established himself as a first-team regular at Anfield.

He made a total of 48 appearances for Liverpool, scoring five goals, but spent the past two seasons on loan at first Marseille and then Bordeaux. He is expected to be officially unveiled as a Rennes player on Friday afternoon.
