Liverpool have made a move for Inter Milan striker Obefami Martins.

The Nigeria international was booed by home fans yesterday at the San Siro and has lost the confidence of coach Roberto Mancini after an indifferent campaign.

Newcastle United and Tottenham have already held talks with Inter about Martins’ situation, but have baulked at his £10 million price-tag.

Liverpool hope to clinch an agreement by offering cash plus Spain international Fernando Morientes in exchange.

Inter coach Mancini is keen to add a physical presence to play alongside Adriano and after receiving short shrift from Fiorentina last week after an approach for Luca Toni, will welcome Liverpool’s proposal.

I havent watched much Serie A this seaso but Martins is a crackin striker. He is a ver fast and powerfull individual was one of Nigerias best players in the ACN. Ill try dig some vids up of him.

Weve got around £8,729,298 extra in prize money for finishing 3rd in the League this season so this deal could be sown up sooner rather than later. .

Great pace, average everything else. Quite a poor finisher, and would only be a small improvement on Cisse. No way worth £10mil IMO.

Probably just newspaper rubbish anyway.

How much of Martins have you seen? Im not an expert on him but during the last year of Vieri he was the best striker there and naturally with a player like Adriano youll be second to him. Ive watched bits of him for he last 3 or so years. I think hes possibly as fast as what Owen used to be but a lot more physically dominant.

Sounds like a bit of a rumour to me. I'd be OK with Martins but I still think we could do better in terms of strikers (obviously would have prefered Adriano :D ) and if he's lost his confidence, I definatley don't want him, especially for £10m.

MARTINS:

2005/06 Season Totals Starts: 24 • Sub: 14  goals:  11
2004/05 Season Totals Starts: 22 • Sub: 18  goals:  17
2003/04 Season Totals Starts: 18 • Sub: 15  goals:  10

overall: last 3 seasons - GAMES:   64    GOALS:   38

*********************************************
CISSE:

2005/06 Season Totals Starts: 29 • Sub: 28  goals:  20
2004/05 Season Totals Starts: 14 • Sub: 11  goals:  5
2003/04 Season Totals Starts: 47 • Sub:  4   goals:  30

overall: last 3 seasons - GAMES:   90   GOALS:   55

*********************************************

those are stats from all competitions. and even with a long period out injured, cisse doesnt fare that badly in head to head. i think that martins would offer significant power and pace up front.. strangely though cisse does likewise.
the major negative for me is however djibrils ability to lack key awareness... is martins that much different? not certain.

once right-wing is sorted either of the two above would offer similar strengths. with obefemi martins edging it on technique.

with good service cisse could well flourish either... this is a non arguement, i just wanted to see the 2 recent histories in comparison.

for my own opinion id be happy with either one. one of them though has had a crack of the whip.

I think I'd rather take my chances with Horseface... no, actually I'd rather have a one legged, blind puppy with ADHD than Horseface.

For a start the rumour is probably rubbish as I've not seen any of the more reliable sources carry the same story.

But hypothetically...

Martins wouldn't be that much of an improvement on Cisse imo, but an improvement nonetheless.  I would only take him if he was one of 2 strikers brought in this summer.  He's quick and would be a good replacement for Cisse because we really need the option of a pacy striker when Cisse goes.  But I still think we need someone who will be 'the main man' up front if you like.  Martins isn't good enough imo.

i dont rate Martins at all???
pace he may have and well built he may be......but essentially so is sissy ......he can't be faster than cisse:p
Martins is a very poor finisher and is worse footballer than cisse .

I rate Martins.

Strong, fast, good finisher..

But I would rather have Adriano. :D

Hope he doesnt turn out like Heskey.

I think the rumour such that it is does make some sense.  Morientes could do well in Italy and Martins may well be a good compromise of strength, awareness and pace.  Some one who will complement the guile of Robbie, uniqueness (all i could think of to describe him) of Crouch and the raw pace of Cisse.

FWIW I think we'll keep Cisse and wouldn't be surpised to see Morientes stay until January either unless Rafa finds someone he's 100% happy with for the reasons outlined in this thread. Cisse comparison

Our priority is or should be IMO a specialist right winger and the rumours surrounding SWP for 14 mill if true would bring more benefit to the team as a whole I think.

Hes not worth it, when he first appeared in seria A he was the next best thing to come out of africa. Inters hope of him being their wonder kid have evaporated, if I remember right liverpool payed 10 million for a big powerful quick striker with an indifferent scoring record before, his name was heskey. Hes not what we need to move us forward

The main thing with Martins is his finishing..  Sadly lacking in this department just like Cisse so if we already have one.... do we really need another? For 10M there are a lot better places we could be looking. Probably another Rafa smoke screen.
