Read in the paper today that we are interested in Valencia striker David Villa. There is a possibility of us just paying the cash or a possible swap deal involving morientes.

I've been looking for a link everywhere but no luck so far.

edit:

Yes! found one

RAFA BENITEZ is making a stunning move to take Spanish super striker David Villa to Liverpool to end his goal-scoring problems.

Benitez wants the 24-year-old, who is tipped to lead his country's line at the World Cup, to put the finishing touches to his side after growing frustrated at his lack of firepower.

Villa only joined Benitez's old club Valencia from Real Zaragoza at the start of the season and has already rattled in 15 goals to head the scoring charts in La Liga.

So Liverpool may have to pay up to £10million for the missing link in their side - but Benitez is working behind the scenes to pull off the coup.

Benitez thinks Villa, a powerful British-style forward, could cope with the physical side of the Premiership - but also brings a cutting edge which his team have been missing.

Liverpool have been struggling for goals, with Peter Crouch doing a good job without being prolific and both Djibril Cisse and Fernando Morientes failing to fire.

The Kop will try to move out Cisse again at the end of the season while Morientes may also go, with the possibility of offering him to Valencia in a swap an option. However, Benitez wants to bring in Villa whether he moves out any of his current forwards or not. There will be money to spend and a proven marksman is the priority. Villa has been a regular scorer throughout his career, notching one every two games at unfashionable Zaragoza. He has carried on that run at Valencia as they chase a top-four finish.

There will be a heavy price to pay for Liverpool, especially because of the Benitez factor. They can expect to be charged a premium because their former manager is coming calling.

The Anfield club has cash available, bringing forward £20m of their money from Reebok's sponsorship recently.

Benitez spent on Dan Agger and Gabriel Paletta, but has more than £10m left.

There are not many top strikers around, as Liverpool proved with their move for Robbie Fowler.

???

I've heard this rumour myself earlier in the week from a fella in work and was a little sceptical about it given that villa only joined valencia in the summer and the animosity that exists between rafa and the valencia board.
However we do know that rafa was running the rule over villa when he was at zaragoza and came close to moving for him i believe. The mention of money being available from the reebok sponsorship does confuse me as i don't recall there being any kind of new deal signed (and why would there be when we are moving to adidas in the summer) i assume there must be some sort of performance related payment from the champions league success or something but again i'm still convinced there isn't anything coming from reebok due to there being a bit of animosity between them and the club over the balls up of the new away shirt last summer.

What paper was it in adam?

Some fella in the pub yesterday was talking about this, am not sure if he had read the People or had heard it from somewhere else but he was pretty certain that Rafa has already started negotiations to get him before the world cup.
I havent seen much of him, but he's rated highly by anyone that speaks about him.
What type of striker is he ?

Don't know if anyone else has posted this around another part of the board, but I thought it should go here. Being the "official" thread and all:

It was unlikely beforehand, but now if this happens...  :D

It's highly unlikely, and I think it would take a lot more than £10m.

£20m + Morientes, and they'd probably say yes.

In the video clips of his goals, he looks absolutely fantastic. Purely on that evidence, he'd be in the top five strikers in the Premiership, without a shadow of a doubt.

Sh*tski will go for him as soon as we show an interest.

Looks like another quality player will slip through our grasp then. Some quality goals there good with both feet, good with head, and can score a mean penalty.Give them 8m and morientes anyday.

Weren't we linked with Villa when Benitez first took over?

Strange how these guys go on to make something of themselves.

Even stranger is the thought of Doug Ellis buying him. Now there's something to think about.

Be amazed if this came off. Valencia only signed him in the summer and the form he's in at the moment it'd take BIG BIG money to get valencia's attention. You should never say never but with the animosity between rafa and a couple of the valencia directors over their treatment of the great man you could add a few more million onto the asking price than what any other club would have to pay if valencia were remotely interested in releasing him.

I'm very sceptical exactly for the reasons that Rushie explains. If it happens, it's fecking good news for us. Apart from his skill and goals, the very thing I like about this guy is that he's bloody tough. Typical man from Asturias (northern Spain, more to the west from where I am) , worker, with strenght, I think he'll adapt with no problems to the English game.

Yet, I'm sceptical. Anyway, the amount that Lando has posted, would be an amount that is rare in NOWADAYS Spanish football, there's not so much spending, so Morientes + interesting money might do it... Anyway I'll be aware of what the press says here, but I'm sceptical.

Spain is a very interesting market to look in. More and more Spanish players are being plucked from over there and doing well in the Premiership.

I like Baptista before he went to Madrid, although it looks like he has lost his way a bit there.

I also thought that Sisqo of Betis was a reasonable winger who would do well in England.

you mean Xisco JBG. Yeh i liked how he played too, he played well when he came on against us in spain last september, he has speed and is a natural winger.
