Liverpool after Argentine starlet

Liverpool is close to sign Argentine promising defender Gabriel Paletta for 3 million euros. The player, aged 19, would join them when the season is over.

Paletta has been outstanding playing in central defense for his club Banfield and he attracted the interest of many local and foreign clubs, but only Liverpool seems closer to get him.

He was also a key player for Argentina as the team clinched the U-20 World Cup last year.

This way, Liverpool are finding a long term quality replacement for Sami Hyypia.

Well this was on sky sports, wonder if he will get a work permit

Liverpool appear to have won the race for the much sought after Banfield defender Gabriel Paletta.

Despite considerable interest from Argentine clubs - most notably River Plate - it is The Reds who are believed to have agreed a fee of €3 million (£2 million) with Banfield.

Paletta could now join up with his new team-mates in June after Rafa Benitez's side gave the green light for Paletta to see out the rest of the Argentine season with his current employers.

Paletta is expected to undergo a medical at Anfield next Saturday but the player urged caution amid claims that the transfer was already signed and sealed.

"I want to wait until I get to England and see how everything is because I know that my personal contract hasn't been agreed yet," said Paletta.

"The only thing I know is that Liverpool have allowed me to play for Banfield until the [Torneo] Clausura ends."

Paletta Banfield-to-Anfield switch on hold

12/02/2006 - 23:09:38 Gabriel Paletta’s proposed move to Liverpool has been put off until the end of the season, Banfield president Carlos Portell announced on Sunday.

Gabriel Paletta’s proposed move to Liverpool has been put off until the end of the season, Banfield president Carlos Portell announced on Sunday.

The Argentinian club said last week the 20-year-old central defender would be travelling to Merseyside this weekend to begin negotiations with the European champions.

But Portell told TyC Sports: “Negotiations have reached an impasse until the end of the season because Gabriel wanted to play the Clausura championship with us.

“At that point, we’ll try to finish negotiations.

“They are likely to be completed but we’ll wait until the end of the season.”

Paletta has played just 33 matches for Banfield, netting five goals.
