Has to be Stevie G for me!  He has been the only captain since I have been a Liverpool fan, so I guess there's some biased there, but what he does for Liverpool, I can't see any other player being able to do.  He is known for pulling Liverpool out of the holes they get themselves in.  Not only Istanbul, but even when we got second, so many games were saved by a last minute goal or assist by him.  He is the reason I decided to become a Liverpool fan.  He did not leave the club when Chelsea came calling even though he doesn't care about the money or the fame, he wanted to win trophies.  If he went to Chelsea, he knew he would win trophies, but his commitment to the club kept him here because he knows this is where he belongs.

Surprised Phil Neal hasn't got a mention.

The choice is subjective depending on what you look for in a captain.

Emlyn and Phil Thompson were leaders of men and Alan Hansen led by example.

For sheer presence Souness is an obvious choice and the Captain who on ability alone stood head and shoulders above his compatriots look no further than Stevie G.

I'm going for Graeme Souness myself cos he stood above a team of supremely gifted players and oozed authority and leadership.

Got to be Stevie, the others had great teams around them, for the most part SG hasnt and is the one who always brings us forward and wins games by himself by grabbing the game by the balls, can see the hughes/souness argument but they also had the players around them.

SG

Why is Kenny on the list.  I think he captained us in a derby game back in 1978 but that was it.  Also, why isn't Thommo listed given that he led us to a couple of league titles and the european cup in 1981 !
