we are linked very strongly with Barry, Gerrard has even come out and publicvly backed the managers persuit of him, which begs the question.

gerrad commented how well they complemented each other for england, a good player but not a position we are struggling in. maybe we could push gerrard forward with torres and mash and barry in the centre, maybe alonsos days are numbered

I can't say I'm excited at the prospect of him playing for us , but I think he will be a "first teamer" and will also give us a few options as well. Good passer, scores a few goals, takes a good corner and freekick. I think he would be a good buy. I would prefer Kaka admittedly but he might cost a little more.

Thats my feeling exactly. Alonso doesn't seem to have the effectiveness in the premiership as he did a couple of seasons back, whereas I think it is safe to say that Barry is a fairly influential player consistently.

Not as much as if we were rumoured to sign his long time love affair Dean Ashton!

Good player that shines in a decent hard working and well orginized team.
But typically vastly over rated and over priced for the simple fact he is English.

If we want to progress and compete for the title next season and long term 'good' players are not an option. We need to be signing world class players!
Not good enough unless we are happy going round in circles and finishing 4th every season, which no one wants.

Excited,no....in fact i'd be hugely dissapointed!

£12m.....you must be joking ???

Not an exciting signing at all. How old is he...must be nearly 30 now??

He's only just turned 27, he's been around for a long time so probably just seems older. I suppose 27 is nearly 30 anyway.

Good player. I would certainly have him, but wonder where that would leave Xabi..

Would any of you make a footballing description of the player for those of us who do not know him well?

How he tackles, how he controls, etc.

A decent player who'd make a good left-back (as we clearly don't need another CM, not in his style anyway), but a priority and the type of player we require?

No, and certainly not for the type of money you can expect him to cost - being Villa's captain and being English.

No, no, no, no. no, no, no.

NO.

Gareth Barry, better than Xabi or Masch? I f*cking think not my friends. I'd rather have the prospect of Plessis than splash the manditory £8M - £12M (Reo-Coker, being the prime example) it costs on an average English footballer these days.  :no  :no
