Penalty- through the middle - Worth the risk?

Just saw the Charlton game, the commentators it was risky aiming right in the middle. Almost all keepers will dive either to the left or right, depending on the takers. So is it a good idea for penalty takers to aim straight in the middle?
Has this been asked before? If yess ignore this..

yep.. if the taker scores it could mean winning the league, a cup or relegation battle.

If you see the keeper is committing himself then it makes sense to hit it off the ground and straight. It is just as viable to stroke the ball in the bottom corner.
There is much theory involved in taking penalties in my opinion.

Taking a penalty is a risk where ever you put it. Left, right or straight down the middle. The keeper still has got a chance

The best place to put a peno is the top corner, opposite the 'keeper's strongest arm, as it's the farthest away from him, and the hardest to save.
(Goalies invariably favour their dominant hand when it comes to making saves. If they're right-handed, and you put the ball to their left, there's a lesser chance of them saving it than if it were to their right.)
I don't know why players put them along the ground all the time - look where 'keepers dive every single time - bottom corners.

i dont even know why people dont know this, if the ball is placed in the top corner then its unsaveable if the keeper is standing in the centre of his goal when the kick is taken.
however you leave yourself no margin for error as you are close to missing if your shot drifts too far

The margin for error is higher, if you hit it along the ground it's just like passing the ball into the back of the net, very simple.
Still you would expect a top professional who works on his penalty taking would be able to find the top corner 9 times out of 10 from 12 yards. Danny Murphy was excellent at it, best peno taker we've had in years IMO.

Although it may not be the ideal way to take a penalty putting down the middle is hardly risky. How many keepers have you seen who do not dive and stay put to save the one down the middle??

but you also run the risk of hitting the keepers legs as he dives

yeh so as I said, it doesn't matter where you but the ball as long as it's the back of the net.

The penalty went thorough the middle, once the goalie was deceived and went to the other side. Aldo was quite an especialist on this, at least in the Liga. I preffer penalties that are about a feet high and near the post. And strong.
I knew a coach that said that everytime a penalty is failed you have to blame the shooter, not the goalie's merit. I agree, If you send it strong enough and sided enough, it's a goal.
