Pele though by a MILE , Scored a Semi Final World Cup hatrick aged 17 , then scored 2 in the final.
1,000 Goals in his career.
Lit up the 1970 WC finals playing in posssibly the greatest side of all time.
A fantastic ambassador for football
As for the excuse that football was alot more relaxed back then take a look at the World Cup in Chile in 62, the WC in 66 when Pele was kicked all over the piitch and injured......
His audacuious chip from his own half, the famous crossover run in the same game.
The man was a genius ,no one better EVER

He has skills, vision, speed, flair, balance, and that natural lethal left foot. Though not being the correct role model, he is the GREATEST PLAYER EVER.
For me, Pele was also great. As an all out striker, he was best.

It's not just about scoring goals though, is it? There are lots of great goal scorers..., but how many great play makers / heart of the team-type greats come along and make a real diffrence, a contribution that leaves an 'oooozing' unforgetable taste?
Maradona was unique because he made football into an art and turned an ordinary Argentine side into world beaters, through his contribution and drive. 1986 was the Maradona world cup! but much more than that he sat on the mantle of greatness through fantastic skill and awesome displays.
My scarpbooks of the 1986 World Cup (dedicated to Diego of course!) ... are full of the skill and manouveres he was pulling-off, the "trickery, magic, art and precision passing" as well as the great goals and greatest goal ever scored in a world cup.
Pele was part of a great set of Brazilian team players and individuals. He was great too.. but me Maa has seen them both play and always says Maradona is the best!
I suppose once in a generation u get a unique player who breaks the skill barrier.. Zedane has been the main man more recently.. but everyone compares the "talented" to Maradona.. he's the benchmark.. and depsite he's problems their is no-one to compare against without Diego at the top of the list!
Pele himself acknowledged that Diego had indeed raised the game to a plateau not reached before!
