Robbie having a laff with our local media here
---------------------

IT may be a massive long shot - or more likely a light-hearted publicity grab - but Robbie Fowler claims he is doing his best to convince Wayne Rooney to join him at Perth Glory.
Fowler, a former England striker and a legend at Liverpool during the height of his career, claims he spoke to the Manchester United star about joining Perth during a recent two-week holiday back home in the UK.

Rooney is on the lookout for a new club after a serious falling out with Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson.

Manchester City, Real Madrid and Barcelona are the favoured new homes for Rooney.

But in what is proving to be a PR bonanza for the Glory, Fowler is using his star power to attract Rooney's attention.

``It's probably only just come out lately about Wayne Rooney (wanting to leave) but being in the football know, I found out a couple of weeks ago,'' Fowler said.

``So I just had to go home and see whether he would be interested in coming to Perth.

``And the signs were good. Really pleased with the chat we had and we'll see where it takes us.

``He's very, very interested. I told him what a lovely place it is.

``I told him everything about the city. So he's umming and ahhing at the minute, but it's looking good mate.''

Fowler's tone was serious during the short audio interview on the Perth Glory website.

But it's safe to say the bid for Rooney's services is little more than a PR exercise for the embattled Glory, who are reeling after five straight losses and the recent standing down of coach Dave Mitchell.

While Glory owner and mining entrepreneur Tony Sage is a mega-rich man, even he would be spitting cornflakes at the money needed to lure Rooney, who reportedly earns $A144,755 a week in his current deal at United.

And with Rooney still under contract, a Glory spokesman was quick to point out the club had not made an official approach to the soon-to-be 25-year-old.

Perth found themselves in hot water last year when media reports suggested they had approached former England striker Kevin Phillips, who at the time was under contract with Birmingham.

``Well if and it's a big 'if' Wayne Rooney was out of contract and Robbie Fowler could pull some strings, we would love to have him at Perth Glory even as a guest,'' Glory deputy chairman Lui Giuliani said.

``If I said four years ago that Robbie Fowler would be playing for Perth Glory I'm sure many people would have had a laugh.''

While Rooney is pie in the sky stuff for Perth, their ambitions for a top-four finish this season remain a reality despite their record losing run.

The Glory are just three points adrift of fourth spot and will fancy their chances in Sunday's home clash with winless Sydney FC, who sit last on the table with just four points from 10 outings

God Returns :)

Robbie Fowler completed a superb hat-trick as Perth Glory snapped their 10-game winless run with a 3-1 A-League triumph over Melbourne Victory at nib Stadium on Sunday.

Fowler, benched in recent weeks and under pressure to perform after a lean run of form this season, scored in the 13th, 54th and 61st minutes to inspire Perth to their first win since September 5, lifting the club equal on points with seventh-placed Wellington (15 points).

It was also coach Ian Ferguson's first win in charge of the club since taking over from Dave Mitchell seven games ago.

Victory scored a consolation through substitute Mate Dugandzic in the 79th minute, but the damage had been well and truly done by then.

Sixth-placed Melbourne's third loss from their past four games left them three points adrift of cross-town rivals Heart, with a tough match against Central Coast to come on Thursday.

Perth had taken just a single point from a possible 30 in their 10 previous games.

And while the drought-breaking win over Melbourne was important enough in itself, the manner in which it was achieved was the most heartening aspect.

Perth's players were full of energy from the outset, creating a glut of chances in their most productive performance of the season.

Only a brilliant palm away from Victory goalkeeper Michael Petkovic denied Fowler in the second minute.

At the other end, Melbourne striker Archie Thompson - handed his first start since injuring his knee in last season's grand final - showed he had lost none of his blistering pace, scooting past two defenders before forcing Glory custodian Tando Velaphi into a good save in the fifth minute.

Perth had gone five games without scoring but Fowler was given the chance to end that drought when he was brought down by a slight nudge in the box by Victory defender Rodrigo Vargas.

A diving Petkovic saved Fowler's weak penalty, but the Glory striker easily poked home the rebound to the relief of the 6217 fans.

Chances were few and far between for Melbourne in the first half.

But Velaphi was sensational on the rare occasions he was called into action, diving full length to fingertip away Marvin Angulo's goalward-bound effort in the 34th minute.

Petkovic was just as sturdy, foiling Neville's effort with his legs after the Glory defender raced into the box.

But Fowler struck again shortly after half-time, drilling past a diving Petkovic after Neville's smart square-up.

And the dream hat-trick was complete in the 61st minute when Fowler, one-on-one with the 'keeper after latching on to Adriano Pellegrino's beautifully-weighted loft, calmly slotted home

Former Liverpool and England striker Robbie Fowler will join MK Dons as a coach in mid-February.
The 35-year-old will not be available until then because he is playing for Australian side Perth Glory.
Dons manager Karl Robinson knows Fowler from his time as an academy coach with the Reds.
Robinson told BBC Look East: "When his season finishes he'll be over on a regular basis working with the forwards as part of my coaching team."
Fowler scored 230 goals across 15 years in English football, playing for Liverpool, Leeds, Manchester City, Cardiff and Blackburn Rovers and worked briefly with the Dons squad in May.
Robinson, who is five years younger than Fowler, put his Liverpool connection to good use in pre-season by persuading Dietmar Hamann to become a player-coach.

Fowler has scored five times in 15 games for Perth this season
And with the recent departure of first-team coach Alex Rae to become Paul Ince's assistant at Notts County, the German has taken on extra responsibility.
"Didi's really stepped up to the mark, sometimes when people move on and people move forward you don't realise how much quality they have in them," Robinson said.
"He's a very good coach and if can pass a small amount of his experience on to these young players then it will only enhance the team."
