nice one barrow

A statue of former England and Liverpool football captain Emlyn Hughes is being unveiled in his birthplace of Barrow, Cumbria.

The defender, who became a TV personality after retirement, died in 2004 from brain cancer, aged 57.

FA chief executive Brian Barwick is set to dedicate the bronze statue - a pose of Hughes in mid-kick - on Friday.

The sculpture will be sited at a new office development on Abbey Road, which has been named Emyln Hughes House.

The former television Question of Sport captain, who was awarded an OBE in 1980, played 650 games for Liverpool, won 62 England caps and captained his country 23 times.

He was named Footballer of the Year in 1977 and also played for Blackpool, Wolverhampton Wanderers, Hull, Mansfield and Swansea, before a 20-month spell as manager of Rotherham United.

After his playing career he lived in Sheffield.

The statue has been funded by the Northwest Regional Development Agency.

Was my second favourite player (after Stjohn) when I started going to Anfield. A true legend and a great footballer. I think he played over 600 games for us and only missed about 2 during that time.

The most dazzling personality ever seen from a football player.

Uber-charismatic.

i just think its sad how we can have 4950 posts abuot the directors, 340 arguing on whther we have the right manager and a true legend like this only gets 8 posts!!! (including mine)

pity more fans dont appreciate what we have now and what we have had and would rather bicker about whats going wrong

I wasn't born in those Liverpool days of the 60's and 70's also the 80's, but I watched clips of 'crazy horse' and read alot about him. He deserves a statue, a great player and a liverpool legend.

A true legend,I know Abbey Road in Barrow only too well,me Ma ran a guest house there in the early 90's,used to see Emlyn's brother Gareth in the Greengate club:)

Speaking of legends btw,why don't you all sign this one for the late great Billy Liddell, the people of Townhill/Dunfermline want a statue of Billy erected, its only right that a true Anfield legend should be commemorated in this way,it only takes a minute to sign it

www.billyliddell.org.uk

This is the link to a new site that will give you any info you need, there is a link to petition the Scottish parliament on the site so if you could spare a few moments then please sign it

Our local MP John Park has forwarded a motion to the Scottish parliament as well, details of that can be found on the site also.

If anyone on here has got any pictures of Billy Liddell in action etc then please forward them to  mike.payne@fife.gov.uk for inclusion on the site
