yeah, aim a bit lower for a first car. 2006 Golf GTi aint gonna be cheap to insure - end of.

Even if I go for a cheaper car for the first year and then buy the golf after that, with the 1 years NCB it will still be that same price wont it? Or is it really best to just wait until I get to that point....?

hmmm, tricky one this. Me, I'd buy an older car (cheaper) and run it for 3 years then try for the Golf or similar. But I know what its like when you want something.

My cars in order...

1993 Astra 1.4, kept it 2 years
1994 Mondeo 1.8 GLX, kept it 2 years
1996 Peugeot 306 D-Turbo, kept it 3 years
1999 Peugeot 405 SRi, kept it 4 months
1998 Astra Sport, blew it up after 3 months
1999 Rover 220 SDi, blew it up after 1 year
2000 Astra SXi, kept it 5 years
2006 Ford C-max 1.8 TDCi - had it 3 month so far

Nah to hell with that. I'll run with a 206 or Polo for a year max then just take the hit with the insurance and get the Golf. I probably should have gotten a car earlier so that's my fault.

golf gt tdi has quite a bit of grunt for a first time owner/driver. get a bog standard golf diesel and get it remapped but don't tell any f.ucker from the insurance :idea

Bav, look at this months 'Classic & Sports Car' magazine theres a feature on MG´s including that model. Might have it on their website but defo worth a walk down to Smiths for a free blimp. The MGF is covered on page 94/5 to be exact and they give it the thumbs up.

i reckon £300 tops, depending on who you use. there's one called angel tuning who come to you and do it on your drive and will give a full refund and set everything back to standard if you're not 100% happy with it. diesels respond very well to a remap (anything with a turbo does) - you can expect to get 20-25% more power without compromising the mechanical bits too much. they can turn the wick RIGHT up if you want, but then beware broken driveshafts, clutches, gearboxes!!!
