Ok basically I am looking at one of theses.

MG TF 1.8 135 16v 2dr Convertible

I am rubbish with car knowledge so was hoping someone here can give me their thoughts. How reliable are they? If I look after it will it last a long time? I don't intend on racing it around but I just like the look of it.

It looks like a nice car Bav. My advice is to offer the guy 2/3 of what he is selling it for on account of the fact that your best mate has just split up with his Mrs and has offered to sell you one which is exactly the same model and year for that price once the "settlement comes through" in three weeks time. If he refuses, leave him your number and save yourself a couple of grand.

As for the car itself and the actual mechanics of it, my advice is to clean it regularly so it doesn't rust, and not to neglect the hoovering out of the insides (I don't know too much about cars but both of these are sound tips).

Not sure about it being a womens car Effes but I will check that out. :D

I should probably google it more but I was just wondering if there are any major problems specific to the TF. Is there anyone here really car savvy?

Sorry Bav..... the MG is a sh!te car.....

Hopelessly unreliable...... If you're gonna get an MG, get one from a bygone era like the midget et al....

Go for the VW Scirocco

Someowners reviews here Baz, they seem happy enough.

Thanks thats what i was looking for. I read up a bit today about a few usual bugs this and the MF suffer from.

Ok now I have a question about insurance. I always commuted to uni and to work now so this is my first car. I was also looking at a Mercedes C200/c180 Coupe. The annual premium is like £1500 and the excess is £750.

Will my annual premium and excess be higher by default with thsi being my first car? Will they both come down themselves naturally after a year if I don't have any claims?

Thing is I don't really want to buy a banger now just to wait for a year for my premium to come down. Could one possible way be to get myself added to the insurance on my mum or dads car and then just wait it out for the premium to come down? Would that work?

The actual reviews I have read are not that bad, infact most are very happy with it. Some are moaning about leg space that's all. I really don't mind this for a first car. Hopefully as long as I look after it then it should run fine.

don't get an mg tf!!!! they're notoriously unreliable, the rover k-series engines are known to love a nice head gasket failure which can cost around £1500 to put right. also with the demise of mg rover, a lot of the newer cars would have seen their warranties go up in a puff of smoke and therefore be more likely to have unrectified faults and potentially sub standard back-street servicing. ok they look quite good if that's your thing but if you want a little 2 seat roadster the mazda mx5 is in a different league altogether and they're bombroof build quality

that's my two penneth anyway and i'm a car nut  :wwww
