I can't make my mind up about whether the British government is right to try to gag its athletes from talking about human rights when in China.

I mean part of me feels that warring tribes used to stop for the olympics so all politics should be put aside, and USSR got it in 1980.

However, banning South Africa from sports helped (a bit) in making the white people running the country feel alone. Also, I saw a picture of the England football team in 1937/8 give the nazi salute when playing a game in Germany as they were ordered not to insult the fuhrer-I'm sure they wish they didn't.

Personally, I think China want the olympics for political reasons - to show the world that it has arrived and how strong it is so I probably think it is fair enough to use it for your own political beliefs.

If the government is gagging the athletes from speaking of human rights, then the british government knows how bad the human rights are in china.

Hasnt Spielberg just distanced himself from the whole thing?

the government doesnt have the right to gag tho right? Freedom of speech and all that.
