The island gave life to all, the smoke monster was created when the two brothers fought, as mother said they should never fight each other.
It wasn't a documentary dude. The island was magical you can say. It made a good story.
Great shout on Buffy being a good ending dude

my own simple interpretations are that the island was a place with 'magical' properties that pretty much kept a lid on the balance between 'good' and 'evil'. the light and water coming together in the cave was the manifestation of that balance, and if it was put out then all hell would break loose across the whole world. therefore it had to be protected. the properties the island had were manifested in various ways and we know that over centuries, possibly millenia, people had been drawn there for various reasons, from the people who built the statue (maybe 'mother' was a descendent of them) to the dharma initiative.
the smoke monster was a manifestation of the properties of evil that managed to use the body of the orginal MIB to escape its original state. or maybe it possessed the MIB without killing him.
the oceanic815 passengers needed the interactions with the properties of the island and the situations it created to find the resolutions they needed in their own lives.

Thats what i thought they were doing to explain in depth. I wanted to know where did that lady come from who was protecting the island. Why is the island magical?
Maybe the island has just been there for eternity and a supreme being was placed there to protect it. One by one sucessors came in line such as jacobs mum and then jacob, jack, hurley etc...
I would have like it if they had explained that though.
I've got a feeling they are going to create another spin off episode. Image the amouth of viewers world wide would watch that.. Great way of making extra dosh.
