Any thoughts on what our best possible line up would be for 2010?

I would go for

                                     Green

             Johnson       Terry - Ferdinand         A.Cole

                                      Barry
             Milner                                            J.Cole
                             Gerrard - Lampard

                                    Rooney

Have play a little more focused down the middle with Johnson coming up in front of Milner.

Best England lineup is a lineup that doesn't include Johnson and Gerrard. :D Only messing...yeah that looks about right although I don't know about Gerrard and Lampard both going forward like that. It has never really clicked in the past. IMO only 1 or the other should play.

Gerrard should defs be behind Rooney. I'm sick of seeing him shifted out wide cos Fat Frank takes up so much space

Rooney cant play upfront by himself

as long as Gerrard's in that position I'm not bothered who's in front :D

shift Rooney out wide, he did it often enough for the Mancs last season :p

I think Milner ahead of Johnson would certainly help our player.
He was slaughterd in the papers and by pundits after the Slovenia game but i dont think SWP or Lennon gave him any protection.
Kuyt does alot of work tracking back and doubling up. I think Milner would work just as hard and is a decent enough player going the other way for it to work for England.

Agree about Rooney, he is never a lone striker or a striker that can lead the line.

id go for

                                   James

Johnson          Ferdinand          Terry          A.Cole

                     Gerrard             Barry

J.Cole                       Lampard                   Rooney

                            Heskey/Defoe

Theres a few changes that can be made depending on the opposition, id have Heskey against the bigger sides, Walcott against sides that have a sht leftback, Rooney down the middle with A.Young or J.Cole down the side against the stronger sides...etc etc... But on paper, this is probably the best starting 11 England can out out atm....

Goalkeeper is still a massive issue IMO. It's as if the shirt is cursed and whoever puts it on is destined to feck up

I'd say your best lineup is...

                                  Green

Johnson               Terry          Ferdinand           A. Cole

                                  Barry

                      Lampard        Carrick

                                 Gerrard

                      Rooney              Crouch

For me Green is better than James.

I think the back four picks itself these days.

If any team suits a midfield diamond it's England, especially with the way the two fullbacks play and with pretty versatile central midfielders who you'd think could interchange quite well.  All of the wide men (Young, SWP, J Cole, Walcott etc) have been very hit and miss.  I'd solve that by picking none of them.

Up front Rooney can't play there alone.  He needs a bit of a target man and I don't know why Capello doesn't like Crouch.  For me he's a better player than Heskey or Defoe.  He can score goals and also is capable of holding the ball up.

Capello's methods and selections seem a bit odd to me, but the man gets results, you can't argue with his track record!

Defoe should be in there for the Croatia game. He's as in-form as he'll ever be.

2010 is a bit far off but you'd have to say the back four looks nailed on, and that Barry, Gerrard, Lampard and Rooney are all likely to be starters if fit (certainly three of four). The wide midfield areas are up for grabs, and that's between Ashley Young, Joe Cole, SWP and Lennon. Perhaps Rooney could fill wide left but in an ideal world he'd stay in the middle. Something like:

                                James

Johnson             Ferdinand              Terry        Cole

                             Barry

Cole                                                         Young
                     Gerrard       Lampard

                             Rooney

Rooney for Young and Defoe for Rooney depending on form and opposition. Crouch as the target-man option, in which case you'd maybe take out Lampard.

Yeh I was thinking of something like that as well, but I would much rather Joe Cole than Carrick.

good team with good manager. Don't know what the first eleven should be but no way Gerard and Lampard should play in the centre.

I'd prob go with Gerard behind Rooney. No real goalscorer in the team but France won in 1998 without a goalscorer (1998 Henry wasn't much and was out wide - remember guivarch)

No real goalscorer in the team?

Gerrard and Lampard hit 20 goals every season mate.  Rooney will probably hit 20 this season now he's playing up front.  All three scored tonight.  I'd say they have three real goalscorers personally.

Seem to be doing alright with Gerrard covering on the left and joining in attack when he can. With Lampard and Barry covering when he does go forward, he gets quite a bit of freedom there.
